Yesterday the weather was at -41 degrees with windshield, I had to boost my car 3 time all I wanted was to go to home depot which is 10 min away. Before leaving the parking lot, I let the car warm up for about 15 min after boosting it with my wife Ford escape which had no problem starting , parked at home depot went inside returned to the car it didn't start anymore.

Thank god for a good Samaritan who ended parking in the space right in front of me who happened to drive a big chevy truck gave me a boost, while my car was been boosted a woman came and ask if we can boost her car too, so we did. I let my car running as I'm walking back to my car it died again, got it boosted again and drove it home as fast as I can after getting a kale wrap at McDonald's, .

I got the battery tested with the volt meter, it showed 12.26 when engine off and 14.86 while the car was running. the battery was changed 6 month after I purchase the car in December 2012. I'm glad that today is the last day we will be in the -35

Guess its time to order one of those small battery booster.

 

It's a quirk of math that -41*F is also -41*C. I didn't know that. But -41*? You must be up at the very northern part of Ontario. Those are scary temps. I sure wouldn't have left the house for a trip to the hardware store, or anywhere for that matter.

Good luck getting through that cold blitz, what battery are you running right now? Can't imagine you'd get a long life running in those wicked temps.

You might have an issue beside the battery.

I could be wrong, but, I was under the impression that once the car is running, the alternator will supply the required voltage unless you have an alternator problem. However, if the battery is 'shorted', preventing the alternator from maintaining system voltage, that's when the car can't run and that is, indeed, a battery problem.

Bottom line: check the battery and the alternator.

He said he had only a 10 minute drive, and thats not nearly long enough to get a charge back into the battery.

I'm more shocked at the McDonalds Kale Wrap than the temperature.

 

12.2 volts means your battery is at about 60% of full charge. This could be due to starting it often in a short period of time -or- your battery needs replacement soon.
14.x volts with the car running indicates your charging system is working.

Go for a long drive around 1-2 hours. Let the car sit overnight and check the battery voltage again. The battery voltage should be > 12.5 (for a 90% charge)

Also, in the warmer weather, listen to when the car starts. Does the starter sound different? Does the engine turn over slower?
If so, get your battery tested (Canadian Tire or other shop) to see if replacement is needed.

Fun Fact:
Cars don't "feel" windchill, only people do. (and any warm blooded animals)

 

I went out today at -27 I tried using the automatic starter but it didn't start so I sat in it and tried the manual way and it started but it did feel like it was slower. I will take for an hour drive and get it tested in the morning before work.

Since today is family day and everything is close I will try to get it check on Tuesday

My friend's coworker had one and when he tried to boots his car it didn't work he left it in his car all the time.

hahaha, it was the healthiest meal on their menu, (I hope).

-41c are the kinds of temps you REQUIRE a battery blanket or warmer.
Not surprised at all that your battery was saying no. Not to mention it is 4 years old and average life of an automotive battery in newer cars is 4-6 years.

We replace loads of batteries when it gets cold but we never experience temps of -41.
