What is this object?

Mysterious thing (Sharpie for scale)

A few weeks after I'd purchased my G37 sedan, I found this odd black plastic object tucked into the pocket on the back of the front seat. There appears to be some kind of residue on it (lower left corner). I can't seem to figure out what this is or where it's supposed to go. Anyone know?

It slides into the rear portion of the cup holder area

Not in any way I can find. It looks like something to do with a cupholder, but I can't figure out how it's supposed to fit in there.

I have an automatic, not a manual. So the cupholder I have looks like this:

According to this video, there is a removable partition in the cupholder for the manual:

... but this doesn't look like the same part.

the little 3 shaped flap that folds down, fold it down and the 'mystery piece' is part of the back wall it presses up against. Heres a drunk picture of where it goes, hope it makes sense.

So that's where it goes!

Thanks for your awesome illustration. That should keep my soft drinks from sliding back and forth now when I take corners.

Now that we are on topic, is there any way to replace this ugly looking cup holder?

Or replacing the whole middle console? I find it really not useful!

Or maybe find something like this that you can "summon" with a push of a bottom and hide it when you don't want it/need it.

The awkward cupholder in the 6mt is an afterthought due to the relocation of the parking brake. I have no idea if there are solutions to it, perhaps something like this? Motorsport! Plug & Chug Cup Holders, 03-05 350Z - The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts

LOL. I was thinking you might be tempted to clean it before putting it back.

I 409'd it after taking the pic. Still need to clean out the rest of the cupholder though.

I keep my paper and pens in there. No way would I trust it with any sort of cup. In fact, about the only permissible open beverage in my car is water. Absolutely nothing else.

It's pretty good at managing small to medium-sized drinks. 32oz or larger cups, you need to keep a hand on the beverage when you corner, or it will shift from one side to the other. So far I've not had one spill, but that's because I'm pretty careful. I do NOT want a spill in this interior. Hopefully, now that I've added this piece back in, it will keep the shifting from happening.

Your policy is hard to argue with, though.

There's supposed to be a thin, removable plastic panel that slips into the grooves in the middle. It's what turns an otherwise useless rectangular hole into two virtually useless cup-holders.

Yours seems to be missing. The 6MT cup-holder is so freaking lame.

Our streets out here are in pretty bad shape. A slalom course if you will. No open drink is safe... At least not the way I drive.

I hate using the center console cup holder. I always use bottles with caps and just place it in the door cup holder....
