True reason the sport package sedan did not come with the Akebono BBK?

370Z Sport Brake Upgrade for the 350Z - Modified Magazine

A great article that can give a little bit of insight into why to upgrade, although it's about 350 and 370z's in regard to akebonos compared to base 350 brakes.. It also addresses how suspension setup factors into braking performance as well as tires.

'Improved heat dissipation, pedal feel, modulation and control, as well as better initial clamping power and the elimination of brake fade, were all direct results of the Akebono/370Z brake upgrade.'

I ask as I read somewhere how well the awd performs and it does not take a lot away from the regular rwd, the only place it does takes away is the additional stopping distance and they thought the reason for that was the sport package comes with bigger brakes.
If you hammer on the brakes while driving and abs kicks in, your tires are the limiting factor not the brakes.

Another factor to consider is fuel economy. By using lighter calipers and smaller rotors, Infiniti reduced unsprung weight and marginally improved the G37xS rolling resistance. However, I think the bigger factor in this decision was product planning and that most customers in this segment don't really care or use a BBK much. Keeping costs down and profits up is high on the priority scale.

Lighter rotors, sure. But the calipers aren't rotating mass, so their impact is neither more nor less than putting a gymbag in the trunk.

The xS should really have come with the BBK.

Actually I don't think the floating calipers (at least the front ones) are lighter than the Akebonos, those damn things are boat anchors.

Rotors are where the increased weight happens.. you actually shed weight in the caliper department if you upgrade from base brakes --

Akebono:

Front Calipers: 10 lbs each
Rear Calipers: 5 lbs each
Front Rotors (14" Stoptech): 27 lbs each
Rear Rotors (13.8" Stoptech): 18 lbs each

Front Base Caliper: 13.25 lbs each
Rear Base Caliper: 6.5 lbs each
Front Base Rotor: 15.5 lbs each
Rear Base Rotor: 11.75 lbs each
