Dealer 30K Maintenance, Scam?
Seeking advice from all the Infiniti experts here.
I have bought a Certified Pre-Owned Infiniti g37x. A 2013 model year with 29000 miles. As I am fast approaching my 30K Scheduled maintenance; I inquired the dealership of the cost and they have quoted me 820 bucks (Des Moines, Iowa) for it. I tried calling Michigan (my home state) dealership and they said 890.
Out of curiosity, I contacted them again this morning to ask for a list of services that are to be performed, and only some of it will be matching the manual's required services.
According to the dealer,
Oil Change, Engine Air Filter, and Differential Oil will be changed along with wheel alignment. They are adding the throttle body service(not sure what that is, Not listed on the manual's Sched 1 or 2 for 30k Maint). Thats about it. Is this worth 800 dollars? Please guide me on the right direction here. Replacing brake fluid is a component listed in the manual, however it is not included in this maintenance service and will cost 129 extra on top. Lets say, I am looking close to a 1000 dollar bill here.
Here is what the manual suggests for 30,000 Mile maintenance. Please correct me if I am looking at the wrong manual and such. (noob here).
❑ Replace engine oil and filter
❑ Replace brake fluid
❑ Replace engine air filter
❑ Replace in-cabin microfilter
❑ Lubricate the propeller shaft (For QX56 4WD models)4
❑ Rotate tires (refer to page 11 for exceptions)
❑ Inspect the following:
__ Automatic transmission
fluid 1,3
__ Axle & suspension parts
__ Brake lines & cables
__ Brake calipers, pads, rotors
__ Brake light and cruise
control switches2
__ CVT fluid
__ Differential oil 1
__ Drive shaft boots (4WD/
AWD)
__ Exhaust system
__ Front suspension ball
joints
__ Fuel lines/connections
__ Fuel tank vapor vent system
hoses
__ Propeller shaft (4WD/
AWD/RWD)
__ Steering gear and linkage
__ Steering linkage ball
joints
__ Manual transmission oil1
__ Transfer case oil
(4WD/AWD)
should I take the dealer's quote and do their recomended services? or strictly stick with the manual? First time Infiniti owner here, any advice will help me educate in owning and maintaining this wonderful machine.

I am afraid of this service as well. I think it is overpriced for what it is. I am curious what responses you will get. I feel like most can be done for much less. I have considered having another shop just swap the brake fluid. I will have my dealership swap engine oil, rotate tires and do the inspection. I will change the air filters (engine and cabin). I plan to stick to the manual.

Change the cabin filter and air filter yourself (don't need to be mechanically inclined to do this).
Do you drive aggressively? If not, diff fluid most likely is fine (they actually recommended 60k for the casual driver).
Kind of the same with brake fluid but I'd rather be safer than sorry with that, so you could get that done if you felt so inclined.

plus for what Around said, the 60k is the big one. I did mine a month after a bought my car 58k miles. I had to to mine before I hit 60k tho cause I bought the Infiniti wrap warranty same at the same time. BTW Warranty was with it so far. Paid $200 and had a headlamp and rt front axle replaced so far.
Change your oil. $40-$50. 30 min.
Change your air filters. $25. 5 min.
Change your brake fluid. $10. 1.5 hours. Or buy PowerBleeder, add $100, subtract 1 hour.
Replace in cabin filter. $15. 30 min.
Rotate tires. $0. 30 min.
Clean throttle bodies. $10. 30 min.
Change rear differential oil. $25. 30 min.
Inspect other items. Repair or replace as needed. $0. 1 hour.
I was generous with the time and cost estimates of each of these, even for a beginner.
Parts to DIY this service - under $200. Time to DIY this service - about half a day for a beginner. ROI from learning to DIY and knowing it's done right + added pride of ownership in having sweat equity in your car - priceless.
I wouldn't call it a scam, but it's fair to say that the dealership is really proud of their service and prices it accordingly. Absolutely none of this work is particularly technical or mentally or physically demanding. A 6th grade dropout (the guy working at the dealership might be one) can do this without issue if you can follow simple direction with pictures and videos.

It's not a scam but they do cram a lot of things into 30k service when not all of them are required. Skip diff service, brake fluid change is optional, it can wait untill you change pads and rotors. Rotating tires and doing alignment is not necessary unless your car is severely out of alignment with steering wheel crooked and or vibrating. Throttle body cleaning can wait till 60k service. Change your oil and have them inspect all of the components of the car, like the previous poster said - change your own air and cabin filter, it's very easy or pay them to do it. That's what I would do.

The list of items from your dealership is reasonable but not the price. Even if you do then individually it should not cost that much. For sure you can take the alignment off and see how much they will knock the price down.

Taking the allignment off will cost 129 less. Maybe I should skip this and do the brake fluid? if at all it is a must?

Agree. But contrary to the manual's recommendation, they are skipping brake fluid change. Will this dishonor my warranty?
No it will not, you would have to seriously mod the car before the warranty is no longer honored, and even then - they would have to prove that modding caused whatever issue they are trying to get out of fixing.
OP, I'd nix the alignment but surely do the brake fluid. Brake fluid is the one fluid that really degrades from moisture, just sitting in your car. The boiling point decreases quite a bit over time, you don't want to wait on this until you're ready for new pads IME.
Black Bettys' reply is an excellent one, if there's anything on his list that you want to try to DIY that's money in the bank and some good hands-on.

You got a good point. If the fluids were dirty and in need to change and alignment was off then they should have changed them during the CPO certification process. If the fluids are ok then not necessary to perform 30k.
