Muffler Delete on Sedan

I was thinking about doing a muffler delete. Would this cause any problems with inspections? And if you have done a muffler delete do you like it? Pros? Cons?

No inspection issues. You're not messing with any emissions equipment. I love my muffler delete on my sedan. I've made some videos about it.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvI...9-wuvMQ/videos

Check out part 2 & 3 of my muffler delete vids on my channel for technical details, video 1 is just sound. There's a fly by on there as well.

Any more questions, feel free to ask

muffler delete

When you do a muffler delete what does it sound like when you are inside the car going say 60 or 70 mph, is it louder than stock? and if so how much?

Search for 'infiniti g37 muffler delete" by Bailey Brewer on YouTube. He has a three-part video series about his muffler delete. They answer your question.

I saw Brewer's videos too (thanks for that sir).

One day I asked myself the same question you just asked. And having been driving performance cars for the last 30 years or so, I've got some sensitive ears for drone. I hate it.

Here's an easy way to 'try before you buy' with regard to the muffler delete. Definitely it's worth the 15 minutes it took to disconnect the stock mufflers.

I backed my sedan up on some ramps, and loosened/removed the two clamps holding the factory mufflers onto the midpipes..

I did not remove the mufflers, just disconnected them.

I went for a 1 hour ride. Interstate, rural highways, town, stop and go.

I rode with the windows up and down in each scenario and here is what I found:

at 70-80 mph cruise, the tires were louder than the exhaust (Michelin PS AS3) IOW indistinguishable from stock.

Absolutely no drone inside the cabin.

The biggest difference in my opinion is that you hear it more when you push the gas pedal, but when you're idling or cruising at light throttle opening, it's not a bit louder inside the car.

That's the kind of exhaust I like. While I acknowledge that the muffler delete is not the same in terms of performance gains as a catback system, it also delivers a nice sound to the driver without being annoying like many aftermarket exhaust systems (ahem flowmaster ahem).,

The factory resonators do an excellent job of stopping drone. I got a quote a local muffler shop for $100, for new tailpipes if I bring my own tips.

And I'll be able to bolt the stock 'cans' back on if I get sick of it or want to sell the car (I cant see that ATM).

Ultimately I think I will have a custom exhaust made that goes from the factory cats with 2.25 inch pipe, magnaflow resonators, and Hooker Maxflo mufflers.

****Google Hooker Max Flo test. They're the quietest and best flowing mufflers out there.**** Only Borla, at 5x the cost, beats it. I've had them on two different cars, replacing flo-wasters, and dynomax.

Only loud on throttle application (think open headers). Quiet as stock exhaust at idle and cruise.

That's how I like it -- and the factory muffler delete compares favorably to the sound I got with MaxFlos on both a built Chevy 350 and a mild Ford 351W in terms of noise at part throttle vs WOT.

I like to be able to talk in the car without yelling, to go on long road trips without getting a headache *ahem flowmaster* and be able to hear the stereo without blasting it.

Obviously exhaust tone is a very individual preference, but I highly recommend you just disconnect your mufflers and go for a ride before you spring for the custom if you're seriously considering the muffler delete.

Beats the **** of shelling out big money for a catback, then discovering you hate the new drone or that the performance gains weren't as advertised. BTDT more than once.

YMMV

Thanks for the videos Screwston! Made the decision to try it much easier.

I got Tanabes last week and before installing them, I wanted to see how the muffler delete sounded. It was great. I drove it for a few days without mufflers. I suggest it to anyone who wants to try something different for free. It literally takes less than 30 minutes remove/install the mufflers, so why not? As others have said, there is almost zero added noise while cruising (unless going uphill). The sound is quite at idle. At full throttle it sounds awesome; people/cops will hear you coming, but only at WOT. I do feel the muffler delete sounds makes our cars sound faster than they are, haha. If G37s ran under 13 in the 1/4 or under 4.5 0-60, the sound would be more fitting.

I have read that in older cars a muffler delete can have negative affects to valves and heads due to back pressure issues, but even that seemed debatable and some said it had no negative effects. Overall, I can't find any reason not to do what Screwston did.

If I can get a shop to just add in a pipe where the factory mufflers go and use the factory tips for cheap, I may just end up selling the Tanabes. The Tanabes do sound great, but after having the muffler delete, it may be worth saving several hundred bucks and going for the louder exhaust.

With the resonator and cat's you should have more than enough back pressure.

Sorry for this newb question here, but how easy is it to remove the mufflers? And would I be able to put it back on later?

For the sedan it's all of 8 bolts. 2 for both clamps, 2 for both hangers on the sides by the wheels, and another 4 for the hangers on the top.

I got a muffler delete and its not loud enough for me. Although on the highway with hard throttle it sounds great. Everytime I go under a bridge I floor it and its awesome. Normally I don't mind drone, but when I went from Chicago to Miami, it was pretty annoying. Usually I don't drive on freeways for hours so I'll be getting test pipes soon.

I got another question for you... When you "delete" the muffler what goes in its place? I'm sorta confused but I'm thinking about doing this

Either leave it as is and you'll have no mufflers and an empty read bumper section. Or get a muffler shop to weld straight pipes with tips in its place.

What year is yours? I have a 13 g37 sedan journey, is the muffler bolt on? I haven't had the chance to check underneath because I have no lifting Jack's for it. The info would be well appreciated
