Car is acting weird. . . help?

Hi Everyone! So last Friday I parked my car at work around 1pm and when I left at 6 my car was dead. I couldn't even unlock the doors, had to use the physical key. I couldn't get in my trunk. I had the car jump started and it started right up with no issues. I figured that I had left something on and killed the battery which is unlike me but things do happen. The car ran strong all weekend and week with no issues. Today I drove it to my daughter's soccer game and after the game it had trouble starting up. It would start but die a few seconds later. All the lights were coming on so it didn't seem like the battery was dead. On the 3rd attempt I gave it a little gas once it started and it stayed on. . . . . I have no lights on, no check engine, no battery nada. Any ideas? They may or may not be related, idk.

BTW: its an 09 with 80k

Original battery? Check your battery. Always start with the easy and obvious.

I had the same problem with my car a year or two ago. Luckily Inifiniti replaced the battery for me.

My battery does appear to be OEM, it says Infiniti on it. My only concern is, why is my battery light not on? I can just take it to Auto Zone or something like that to "test" the battery, right?

Whoa! That's scary. My wife was saying she saw a few weird things as well. I will go to Auto Zone and have it tested.

I don't know that I've ever seen a battery light come on before in a car to indicate a dead battery. In any car. Yes, you can take it in to almost any auto parts store to have it tested. Probably best to remove it yourself to take it in because battery removal in our cars is a PITA.

I was having bad battery symptoms recently and my battery is still under the pro rated warranty period. I replaced it with another good battery I had for another car and put it in the trunk. I was working in the area so I stopped by an Infiniti dealership to have it tested. They told me they can only test the battery while it's hooked up in the car. So I'd have to take out the good battery, put the dead one back in and hook it up and leave the car with them until they could get to me. Probably several hours or the next day. Huh? I've never heard of such a thing. I was amazed they don't have a tester capable of testing a battery by itself.

Have you checked the water cells to see if they're full? Mine was acting real "marginal" a while back and found my water was about 2" low in each cell, just a fill w/ distilled water and a good long drive and it's been solid ever since.

I thought the battery light means an alternator/electrical issue, not specifically a battery issue? Like it just signals that you have a voltage and charging issue.

Anyways, buy a battery from Walmart or Costco and replace it yourself. They have 3 year free replacement warranty and they're really cheap compared to other stores and brands. They also have the best CCA in that price range too.

So I took it to my local Infiniti dealer. I told them what had happened. They tested the battery and charging system. They said that the battery is fine and was just low on its charge. The theory is that I killed it last week by leaving something on and since I only drive like 8 miles a day round trip to work the battery did not have enough time to re-charge. So they charged it there for about an hour and they said I should be good to go.

Glad you were taken care of. However, your battery replacement may be soon anyways since it is about 5 years old. You also live in the Northeast, so you know how the alternating cold and heat really kills the battery.

If your battery is 5 years old, I wouldn't be too optimistic that charging it is going to solve your problem. I don't mean to **** on the parade, but you might want to be prepared for it to die again soon and need replacement. I hope I'm wrong, but that's about he useful life of a battery.

I predict that you have a new battery in the near future.

You can test the individual battery cells with a battery hydrometer,

I'm pretty sure one or more cells is not accepting a full charge.
With a OEM 5 year old battery it is time to replace it. Request a 700CCA rated battery.
The light only goes on if the alternator has no output or a broken belt

Good luck

I've had my 2010 for a little over 4 years and do my own periodic maintenance.
The one thing I neglected was checking the battery water level.
The first time I checked it was after the car was over 2 years old and the water level was really low. I topped it off with distilled water, but figured it wouldn't last too long from being run with the water level so low.
The battery is still running strong. Now I check the level more often.
