Performance in snow

I've had my G37x for about two weeks and we just got some fresh snow in Minneapolis. Is there any dash indicator when the AWD is active? I had the light with the slipping car come on a couple times. I also had snow mode enabled.

I took a right turn a little too fast onto my street and went sliding into the other lane and nearly hit a tree. I figured the AWD would have kicked in and saved my ***....

No, there isn't a indicator that the awd is working. If you see the indicator that says "slip" or the one of the vehicle that is slipping then that just means that you've lost traction.

This was one thing that I wish Infiniti did was have something on the navigation screen that showed the car and the percentage of torque that each wheel is using.

I didn't realize how much the awd worked until I bought a rwd and took a turn I could normally take at 55mph in my X and started breaking the back end loose.

Snow tires, Ross.

Imagine how well your G could handle snow if you put the correct tires on that AWD car.

Get snow tires. AWD does nothing for you other than assist getting going. Stopping and turning comes down to the tires. I am from Minneapolis as well. I run General Altimax Arctic tires on my car.

You will be amazed how well optimized the AWD system is in this car when you add snow tires onto it.

I'm in Edmonton, Ab and we've gotten a good dump of snow this past month.
AWD + Winter Tires is your best combo to tackle the snowy roads.

I'm running Bridgestrone Blizzak WS70's on a set of G35x wheels (second gen) and they are great! Haven't gotten stuck yet!

hey bud. I am from toronto. Just wanted to ask a question aside from winter tires etc. How much KMs do you normally get on a full tank during the winter? Here in TO i was getting about 630 km but now I am down to about 540 or even less.

Thanks

I can't believe how many people from Minneapolis are on here, haha. I also went out last night and my car was sliding all around. Like someone else said, AWD isn't really going to do much for you mid-turn in the snow, it's more about getting you going than anything. You definitely need some winter tires. Watch this vid and you'll see the difference:

I have no experience with the G yet, but my 07 Civic SI used to average around 28-30 MPG during the summer, and would drop as low as 18 mpg in the winter. Dense air = poor fuel economy, unfortunately.

^You are going to love your car with winter tires. Mine could drive up the side of a mountain.

^ while i agree that fuel economy suffer in the winter, it is not due to cold air. dense, cool air is actually good for engine performance and economy since the charge of air has a higher O2 density.

winter fuel economy suffers due to winter gas formulations, increased idle times, slower commute speeds = longer commute times, and a heavier draw on vehicle accessories like defrosters and heaters. also, wheel spin and traction control intervention signal a loss of efficiency. adding all this up makes a considerable difference between summer and winter fuel economy.

It's a factor of a lot of things, but dense air most definitely is a huge contributor of it. Your vehicle has to offset dense air with more fuel. If it didn't, your car would run extremely lean. There's a reason why air intake temps are monitored.

This is a COMMON misconception for AWD vehicles and it drives me up a wall. I respond by throwing on my snow shoes and outrunning any and all AWD owners when the snow hits the road.

At some point I'll have to break down and get snow tires and rims I guess. For now I will slow down a little more when I turn.

My 2013 G37x is a wonderful car, but the 2010 Audi A4 that I owned before the G had much better handling in the snow. No, I don't have snow tires on either car.

It was a balmy day of near 50F here in chicago. Perfect opportunity to get the snow wheels mounted without freezing my @ss off outside. Bring it on!
