Used 09 G37XS - What should I check?

Hello. I am new to this forum. I just purchased a used 2009 G37XS with 80000 miles on it. I purchased a 12 month 12 thousand mile extended warranty with it, mainly because I was scared to buy it without it. It seems to run great to me in the few weeks I have had it now. A friend took a brief look at it and said that the valve covers might be leaking. Another friend is supposed to be putting it up on racks this weekend to do a more in depth check of things.

I was wondering if thee are specific things I need to check including TSBs, recalls, etc.

Also, can someone tell me what the factory wheels are made of? Trying to determine if I need to buy aluminum wheel cleaner or not. Same for the exhaust tips, what type of cleaner should I use? Chrome?

My first advice for Arthur Dent is simple. Don't panic.

For your tips, go to the hardware store and buy some 4-naught (0000) Steel Wool. Use that on your 4 year old exhaust tips to bring them back to life. The OEM tips are crappy anyway, so don't worry about damaging them, but you won't. 4-naught steel wool is very fine. Then go over the surface with some Meguires Metal Polish.

Your wheels are painted, cast aluminum. Clean them with soap and water, strip the crap off with bug & tar remover, claybar the surface, then wax. If they still look lousy, then have them repainted.

Lastly, have the mechanic look at the car before you buy it, not after. But you probably already have regrets about that.

Did you not get it checkout out before you bought it? If the head gasket is blown thats a big pricey job. Hopefully the warranty covers that. Wheels are cast aluminum tips are polished stainless steel

OP mentioned valve cover gaskets, not the head gasket. That's quite a difference, but I'd check both sides closely before going to the trouble of changing either. The G37Xs wheels are sourced from Enkei and a little wheel cleaner with some slbow grease will do wonders.

No regrets so far. I think I would have regretted not buying the warranty. The warranty is bumper to bumper and covers everything but things like brakepads, hoses, wiper blades, etc. I made sure that seals and oil leaks were covered. I got in a wreck and my old car was totaled, bent frame, so I was in a bit of a bind to get a car. I don't know any mechanics. A brother of a friend is a mechanic and I was hoping he was going to be able to look at it but so far he hasn't.

... and don't forget to bring a (microfiber) towel! Seriously, I always keep one in the trunk along with some quick detailer so that I can clean up bird crap as soon as I see it.

I had a 09 X that got totaled at about 46K miles on it. Absolutely no problems with it, and I just changed the oil and air filters, and did tire rotation. From what I hear, Gs are very well built so it should last you a long time.

It's a Nissan. It will be a trouble free car mechanically for quite a while. Maybe a few little things along the way but nothing to break the bank
