Exhaust Before and After

I compiled a video of a before and after for my exhaust setup. I used my GS3 to record these footage. My phone is always mounted there so I would randomly record myself driving sometimes.

Before: Berk HFC, Megan Racing Y-pipe, Stock Mid-pipe, Tanabe Axle-back and Stillen G3. (Listed sounds mods only)

After: FI RHFC, Megan Racing Y-pipe, Meisterschaft mid-pipe (not a direct bolt-on for tanabe or stock muffler), Tanabe Axle-back, Stillen G3, and Uprev. (Listed sounds mods only)

The Exhaust setup I had before had A LOT of rasp/vibration sound around 2.5-4k, this is probably due to having a Berk HFC and having Megan Racing Y-pipe going into a stock Mid-pipe only made it worst. Excluding the rasp I loved the way it sounded, I like the higher frequency exhaust note of a smaller diameter pipe. The higher rev sounds a lot better in person and you don't notice the higher pitch exhaust note in the video.

The FI RHFC and the Meisterschaft mid-pipe totally eliminated the rasp and also increase in the sound. This exhaust is extremely loud and deep. If anything the Berk HFC should be louder then the FI RHFC since the Berk is only 200 cells and the FI is 300. The Meisterschaft mid-pipe has a ID of 2" and the stock mid-pipe was 1.75" the Meisterchaft lacks resonator and they make a huge differences. I love the new exhaust sound from 4k-redline but I don't like the loudness around 2-3k/normal driving, heads begin to turn at 2k rpm (example at 0:43 in the video probably never made it pass 2.25k). I am planning to add two long resonators to help with the lower RPM sound. It seems like I replaced rasp with drone lol.

Looking back its would be cheaper to just buy a complete catback exhaust, but there is limited options for the AWD sedan and I don't mind this learning experience I like trying to design and tune my own Frankenstein exhaust.

How does it sound to you guys? Does it sound similar to another aftermarket exhaust?

It sound pretty good for the most part, really hard to tell w/ my crappy netbook speaker though
I was nervously riding along w/you waiting for some FedEx truck to cut you off
Opens up nicely when you get on it. Sounds similar to mine w/ my Yback
and Injen SRI, although I notice very little drone w/ my setup, mine is around 1.5-1.7k rpm.
Cool that you're up for trying different setups to get just what you want.

If you do another clip set might want to find some really open roads, at least I won't be on pins & needles, lol

Yet another G owner swapping out their Berk HFC for the Fast Intentions RHFC. I'm starting to see a pattern here. And there clearly was a less pleasant rasp in most of the before videos. Well done compiling them into a single video for comparison.

Another observation I'm seeing on the forum is the extremely rare, but overwhelmingly happy, Meisterschaft owners. That's interesting, too.

WOT at an on-ramp into gridlocked highway traffic @1:20... priceless.

And your launch 0-60 at the 2:00 mark... absolutely delightful sound. Want, want, want.

The after sounds much better! The second time you went through the toll it sounded a little ricey, but the after sounds great!

Meisterschaft make some awesome sounding exhaust systems but they are very expensive, I only got the mid-pipe which is nothing special. My local exhaust shop they could of made the same part for half the cost but I doubt the craftsmanship would have been the same.

Yes my only complain with my old setup was the rasp as lower rpm, in the higher range it sounds awesome.

You said you used your GS3 to record that video, did you use a special app or did you just use the record function? And what mount did you use? I've been wanting to get a dash cam setup but I was looking for one to go behind my rearview mirror but I currently have a hang tag so I can't do that right now.

The first sounds he's comparing aren't stock but prior to his latest exhaust mod.

^ What he said. I guess some people just jump into the video without looking at the intro or the OP.

I used the Samsung mount for my phone
Amazon.com: Car Holder ECS-K200 for Samsung i9300 Galaxy S3: Cell Phones & Accessories Amazon.com: Car Holder ECS-K200 for Samsung i9300 Galaxy S3: Cell Phones & Accessories
The design of this mount will fit varies other phones and it is ideal for cam setup because it is extremely solid unlike other mounts I used before. I just used the stock camera function for the setup.

refeyggn just copied chris2k5's post. They were worded exactly the same. I've noticed that happening on a few other posts, not sure if its the same poster or not.

And thanks for the link. I was actually playing around with that earlier today, I bought a dock window mount from Verizon this morning and tried a couple of different dash cam apps, all of which were unsuccessful, so I ended up using the camera. I'm in the process of loading it onto YouTube right now, its taking a long time. Did you notice that the video portrays you going slower than you were actually driving? I watched mine and I swear it looks like I'm driving a lot slower than it felt like while I was recording.

I think my video portray pretty accurately of my actual speed, maybe that is because there were always cars around me to judge the difference in speed. I guess at higher speed without much to compare your speed with it might be hard to judge the speed on the video, much like recording a spinning wheel sometime you see the wheels as spinning backwards due to the effective of low frame rates.

  • FI RHFC
  • Megan Racing Y-pipe
  • Meisterschaft mid-pipe
  • Tanabe Axle-back

I'm guessing one at a time, but have to ask... how and why did you come to that collection?

And if you were going to do the entire header-back collection, would you still go with this, or a full Fast-Intentions exhaust? (Or Meisterschaft, I'm assuming if money were no option.)

Well when I first started to upgrade my exhaust (2 years ago) there were no catback (at least I knew of at the time) options for a AWD sedan. Thus I went at the time the cheapest exhaust upgrade available which was Berk HFC. I got a Megan Racing Y-pipe install at the same time since I got a really good deal on it. I had that setup for a year and liked the increase in exhaust noise, but I didn't like the rasp and wanted a bit more sound. I then added the Tanabe to depth the exhaust and try to muffle out a bit of the lower end rasp. This setup helped with the Rasp but it was still there. I had this setup yet for another year and decided I wanted to increase the diameter of the mid-pipe to increase performance a bit (was going to get uprev) but I didn't want to increase the diameter too much (don't like the sound). At this point I had 3 options,

1) get a custom made mid-pipe
2) Meisterschaft
3) Scrap everything and get FI catback

I chose Meisterschaft but it lacked a resonator so I got the FI RHFC as well. This also another guaranteed that the rasp would be gone. I chose the Meisterschaft for there craftsmanship. At this point I been tweaking my exhaust for 2 years now and I kind of like tinkering with it to get the sound I like, if I got the FI I would feel guilty chopping up the pipe in case I wanted to change something (From videos I seem I felt the exhaust was a bit quiet for my liking) so I went with my frankenstein setup. A full Meisterschaft exhaust would be way too loud for me and also very expensive.

At this point I am happy with my setup but my lower end seems to be too loud. I turn heads from 2k RPM so for the sake of the law and future passengers I think it would be a good idea to add in two resonators to help with the lower end sound.
