Just not comfortable
Just not comfortable
I'm 6 feet 7 inches tall, 210 pounds and it is really hard to find cars that I fit in. I bought a 2009 G37x with 22k miles on it about a month ago from the local Infiniti dealer replacing my 1998 Maxima SE. At first, it seemed very comfortable, but the last couple weeks I have started to feel somewhat claustrophobic. I guess the best way to describe it is that the car fits like a glove that is a bit too small.
The seats are just bad all around for me. I did the seat mod tonight to lower the seat a bit and I think that helped but not as much as I had hoped. Yes, my head is not as high, but it is a bit of an awkward position with my butt so much lower than my knees. There is really no support for the front of my legs. And I still find myself falling out of the sides of the seat on turns due to lack of side support and my wide (not heavy) build. And I desperately want the seat to go back more but it doesn't and I've already got the steering wheel telescoped out to the max. Then there is the issue of me sitting behind the pillar blocking my view even if I found some way to make the seat go back more.
So, what to do? I've thought about getting different seats, but I'm not sure there is enough space in there to solve the problem - would the sport seats be better or worse? I hear in 2011 the seats were changed a bit. Would those be better?
I guess I'm about resigned that this isn't the car for me and I should trade it in for something else and am looking for advice. I know I'm going to take a hit trading it back in but maybe less of a hit if I find something at the Inifiniti dealership where I bought it. I paid $28k for it and unfortunately would prefer not to spend much more than that. I've seen the rare FX35 go for under 30K on ebay, but looking at headroom, legroom specs on it it doesn't seem much better - and I would really prefer a sedan. Are there other used models that I should look at that are under 30K?
I've rambled on long enough. Thanks for reading. I'm wiling to fill in any details that I've missed if it helps you give me ideas. - Brad

You're 6'7" and you fit into a G?? I'm 6' tall and can barely fit into my coupe with a helmet on. How did you manage to fit into the sedan? I don't think you can do anything about the seats either, they've pretty much remained the same throughout the years. Sport seats, if anything would make things tighter on your waist.
Sorry to break it to you, but it's time for a new car...or SUV...

I'm 6'2'' and I barely fit into my 2012 G as well. I don't know how you do it! The G has a very low headline, and as a result very low headroom - especially with the stupid sunroof. It's just the way Nissan designs their sporty cars. I sat in the Z370 and immediately noticed feeling claustrophobic and I hate the feeling of rubbing hear against the headliner. G37 is a little better that that, but even sedan is styled like coupe, so I had to do the famous seat mode so that at least I can drive my car without hair touching. Good luck man. But do not despair - you don't have to "settle" for an SUV to have good headroom. My Subaru WRX had plenty of headroom, I could basically put my palm vertically between my head and the roof and it still wouldn't touch. I'm not saying you need to get WRX, but there are some sports sedans out there that work for us tall folks. Just stay away from sunroofs.
I'm 6'3 and feel fine in the car. I'm confused by those who feel it's small. It's not. At 6'7 I'm not sure what cars, or sedans are bigger than that.
I am also more comfortable in smaller car. I have a 280z that is super small, but i fit fine in that too.

I am 6'1''. The car is perfect for me, even the seat is still high on its lowest setting, but has plenty of head room to spare. 6'7'' is a bit too much for most cars I believe, I would be looking for a full size SUV.

Im 6'3 and dont fit in mine. I did the seat mod and my head still brushes the top, but its better. I like being in tight cars

I have a 72 240z and it has gobs of room more than my g.

I'm 6'4" and feel your pain (35" inseam). I've had the 2009 xS since it was new and feel very confined as well. The sport seats have more side support so I don't slide around like you, but they are also harder and higher off the floor, causing less head room. I performed the seat mod too, and it helped. The only other thing I did was to recline the seat until my head was not touching the headliner. I keep my seat a little closer to the dash because I can't stand being behind the mid pillar (no vision to the left!). It's all a compromise. I like the looks of the car, but it is a bit small for me.
I had a 335 before and there wasn't more room. I won't argue that the seats are on the edge of sucking (sport seats) the BMW sport seats were amazing, but honestly if you think that ever car has to fit "giant" people it doesn't' make any sense. My Tiguan has tons of head room...but it's an SUV.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I went back to the Infiniti dealer today and tried out a loaded Black 09 M35x with 48000 miles. It was a little better width-wise. Headroom and legroom are fractionally better. It really is a boat compared to the G! I really expected more punch with a 300hp engine. It must be really heavy. Overall I think I would be more comfortable in it though.
Unfortunately, we couldn't come anywhere close to making a deal. They basically said that they have tens of used G37s on the lot and only 2 M35s so they don't really want the G back. I can see their point. They did say the could come closer on the other M35 they had in "Grandpa Gold" color. Uh, no thanks! I really hate car dealerships, and I dreaded going back there, but I felt I had to do it sooner rather than later to see if they would help me out.
A number of you mentioned SUVs. I suppose that is a possibility. I have a family of 5 but we have the odyssey to haul everyone around in. 98% of the time, I am just driving myself back and forth to work so I really hate to haul around the extra SUV sheet metal.
As to a weird mental phase. Yeah maybe. The first few weeks I loved driving the thing around. Not a care at all with the seats or anything. So at this point, I'm not sure I trust myself to trade it in and get something else because I feel like I made such a big mistake on the G.
