I'm running cheapo ebay bulbs for my license plate lights, no issues with flickering or light output.

 

Exactly the same here. Just a pair of bulbs left over from years ago, messing around with another car. They've been on the G for 4 years now... knock on wood.

I went with amber LED. And since NY plate are amber to begin with, at night it gives it that dimly lit look, with an amber glow around the edges into the Moonlight White paint. Most people go with bright-white, but I specifically wanted something more subtle and low-key. The car calls enough attention to itself already, figure there was no point in seeing the tag number so easily.
