i hook a lot of my clients up with some sponsorships from various companies and vendors -- it's all about networking.

I never was afraid to be the guniea pig so new R&D can be worked on and can make our cars better.

What separates your car from the rest?

That's what they'll want to know. A sponsorship is a two-way street. If a company is going to give you free parts (or discounted parts) there has to be something beneficial in it for them. They have to know that you are going to generate some interest in their company; interest that has a high probability of translating into money in their pocket. They'll want to know how visible your car is - meaning, how often do you attend shows, what type of exposure will you provide for them. Putting a sticker on your window with their name on it will not be enough.

Sponsorships, for the average Joe, are extremely rare and hard to come by. Like others have said, networking and making connections is a big part of it. Industry insiders often get the sponsorships before anyone else. Not only that, sponsorships are not always glamorous. In many ways, you are at the mercy of the company. You are giving up a bit of YOUR car (your originality) to the company that is sponsoring you.

In short, there are certainly both pros and cons to sponsorships.
