rear wheel drive...moved to philly...worried about snow

rear wheel drive...moved to philly...worried about snow

Hello All,

I read the various posts in here about driving rear wheel drive in snow but there seems to be so much controversy...

i just moved to Philly from LA and now must come to grips with whether i should keep my car.

so for all of you who own a rear wheel drive car in the snow...particularly the G, please share your experiences with me.

Search there are many threads on this topic. I have no issues in the snow, and I live in Jersey. Do it right and put some dedicated winter tires in the winter, and use your summer tires in the Spring. Although i'm kind of glad i still have my Blizzaks on.

I have a RWD sedan in New England and I don't have any problems in the snow at all. Yeah the X would of course be better but I just have a set of snow tires on my stocks and I get by with ease. I wouldn't worry to much about it. Keep the G!

In Philly of all places, you should be just fine with a set of blizzaks. My 05 plowed this winter with Continental ExtremeWinterContacts and I had 0 problems. The car actually performed better than my friends 04 AWD with crap tires.

I did get stuck (really stuck) once a blizzard in about 6 inches of snow despitete blizzaks in stock sizes. I'd get 225s for the rear if I could do it again. I put a 70lbs. sand bag in the trunk but we didn't have snow that deep since.
I'd have to admit my previous bmws performed better as a a whole in comparison in the snow, but used narrower rears in defense to my G.

so winter tires...drive SLOW...shift gears early...and pray???

Don't expect all-season tires to work for you. Get Blizzak's or similar rated snow tires. My G sits if it snows and I take the G sedan. When I picked up the car (bought it used) I bought a set of Hankook Ventus V4 ES all-season tires from Infiniti when having it serviced as the dealer was confident they could handle the limited snow we get around here. They were wrong. I would almost get stranded going up a small grade hill in 1" of slush. VDC will bring you to a complete stop, BTW, which is much better than swinging the rear into a ditch

I'm running ContiExtreme DWS on it now and it does quite well.

yeah man, i have a 6mt rear wheel drive and i had winter tires on it....a few real bad days of weather, i just didn't drive but thats really rare....lol you didn't move to Alaska haha Philly is fine! Let's make a philly club! yey!

RWD w/ all-season tires should be good 95% of the time. I used to have the '05 coupe for 2 years w/ all-season tires and it was fine.

Not all "all-season" tires are alike. Both the Hankook and ContiExtreme DWS's are listed as all-season but the Hankooks are really summer tires that you might be able to drive in sleet with....assuming the road is not covered in it

Get a dedicated set of winter tires and just take it slow. You'll be fine that way. All seasons would be okay if you had experience, however the winter tires will give you a better chance of recovery should a slip or slide occur.
