Totaled 2009 G37

Hi all,

Been a lurker for a couple of years now. This website has been a great resource for me.

So I totaled my 2009 G37 Journey Sedan last week. There was a sofa in the fast lane with no shoulder so I hit that, the center divider, and then the right side of my car was crushed by a semi. Luckily my car did its job and saved my life and I was able to walk away with literally a scratch. Spoke with the adjuster yesterday and was told the car was totaled .

My question is, I didn't have any gap insurance on my car. Has anyone gone through a similar situation to this? I was 1 year and 3 months into my 39 month lease. I've read online that the insurance companies will usually only pay me market value leaving me to pay the difference. If this is the case and I decide to buy (not lease) another G37, is this something that can be reduced/worked out with Infiniti Financial?

Thanks in advance for your help!

First of all, glad you are okay and the car did it's job. A vehicle can easily be replaced.

I'm not sure how it works with a lease but it couldn't hurt to call Infiniti Finance. If you had purchased it then I would have advised you to talk to the bank as well so you don't get "stuck" being upside-down.
If you are buying/leasing another Infiniti, they may be able to rollover any additional funds owed into your new purchase.

BTW, is there any way to find out who owned the couch?

holy batman. glad you walked away with a scratch from that. but ya, i think that's how it works without GAP. when I got my 2010, i decided to get GAP because i did the 0% financing for 3 yrs and put almost nothing down. this way, I would be protected against the difference. besides, it was only about $60/yr more for GAP with my Allstate.

Are you leasing the car with IFS? GAP should be included in the Acquisition Fee( Bank fee) you paid. That's what my dealer told me.

I remember asking the dealer about GAP insurance when I leased my G37.

The dealer said that GAP insurance isn't necessary for leases since leases continually pay that depreciation value each month on top of the other payments, like taxes.

But, I could be incorrect though.

I was told by the dealer that GAP was included automatically in my lease.

Wow, it's usually quite hard to total a $40k car, especially without being injured at the same time. Glad to see you're okay and hopefully you'll have better luck with your next G.

check your lease agreement, if you read the fine print there is a clause something like "if your car gets totaled, we will accept the settlement from the insurance company as payment in full"

just make sure you have the req 100/300/100 coverage for a lease.

OP, man that sucks.. I mean who in the freak would drop or put sofa on the road.. This sounds like some serious issue going on there and glad that hear that you are okay.

Since you have already mentioned you got no GAP...I am going to assume that you have already researched. I think it doesn't hurt to ask leasing company or ur insurance company and double check.

Hard to believe that most of the posts here believe that luck had much to do with the OP walking away from such a huge crash. All the Infiniti engineered safety systems came into play- from crushable structures absorbing energy to the airbags properly deploying. The passenger structure remained intact and I assume the seatbelts did their job as well. In the past, a shunt like this would result in the loss of a limb, permanent injuries or death. Now, we take this kind of safety for granted.

Congrats to Infiniti engineers for making such a safe car! Merry Christmas!

I was told GAP insurance is included in the lease. IFS would not lease a car without it. It kind of makes sense.
