Wanted to say hello. I just traded my 06 G35 this past weekend for a 2011 G37S sedan. Black on Black. Love it! I enjoy the extra power, but my old G had more oomph off the line then this one. I take it the extra weight and only an increase of 9 torque from 260 to 269 is what slows it down.

Congratulations....perhaps the new one just needs to be broken in a bit...I would think the gearing of the 7 speed transmission would make it slightly faster rather than slower off the line....but you're in a better position to judge than I.

I guess that makes it a pretty pure comparison...I doubt low end torque will improve with break in.

I think you will find that the throttle tip in was dialed back in the newer models.
I drove a certified used G35 and it had very aggressive throttle tip in, to the extent that it made it hard to drive the car smoothly. It always wanted to jump off from a stop. Mind you this was the same body car with very little real difference in weight.
If you look at full throttle comparison between the 2 the newer models are quicker. It just means that the new model doesn't snap your neck even when you are trying to just drive normally. It might seem thrilling at first but it would get old in a hurry.

That's a very helpful response, and very interesting to read. Makes me that much more glad I waited. Thank you

I agree! We are currently driving a Camry rental while our G is in the body shop. With just the slightest touch of the throttle at a dead stop the Camry appears to leap forward, but then there's not much after that. Really bugs me. The G is really mild from dead stop acceleration when you want it to be.

The original poster is referring to a 6MT, though. Would this still apply?

Don't be too anxious to feel the full power of your new G, give it some time for the recommended break-in period. Keep her under 4 on the tach.

That was my experience as well. I test drove a used 08 and loved it, was going to buy it - but there was a dealer-driven 09 on the lot for 2.5K more that was beautiful - which is what I bought. I test drove the 09 briefly but never got to sense full throttle as I did the 08.

The 5 speed in the 08 felt much faster to me.

I feel that it does have it also. It just does not feel as fast as my 06 with the rev up engine did on take off. Definitely not as fast as the wife's 2011 WRX. That thing is ridiculous. Its faster then the previous gen STI

That is fast. From Edmunds:

"The WRX STI gets even more turbo boost for 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque. With its standard six-speed manual, the STI achieves fuel economy of 17/23/19 and, more important, reaches 60 mph in a blazing 4.5 seconds."

That's almost a full second faster than the G.

Sorry, back to our regularly scheduled program....
