Starting Car up and Driving?

quick question. when you start your car up in weather between 40-80 degrees should u start it up and let it warm up before putting it into drive or throw it right into drive and take off. is it bad for the engine if you dont let it warm up?

if you look in the manual it states that it should be warmed up for 2 mins...I think.

I never said that is what I do, thats just want the manual says I normally wait about 30 seconds and reverse out of the garage. My car is in a heated garage so the car warms up very quickly. If it has been over 24 hours since starting the car, I might let it sit for a min or two before reversing.

I don't know how long I wait but I just wait until the RPM hits 1000 RPM before driving. Just a habit I got into since I got the car.

The 2010 owner's manual, page 5-11:

4. Warm-up

Allow the engine to idle for at least 30 seconds after starting. Do not race the engine while warming it up. Drive at moderate speed for a short distance first, especially in cold weather. In cold weather, keep the engine running for a minimum of 2 - 3 minutes before shutting it off. Starting and stopping the engine over a short period of time may make the vehicle more difficult to start.

Everytime i start the car, i usually wait till i see the temp needle go up, or the revs hit 1000. Good habit if you ask me.

2 minute warm up every time. Winter or summer. The only exceptions are the rare times I'm in a huge hurry. I go out in the garage, start the car, then find my wallet, sunglasses, phone etc. Then get in, open the garage door, buckle up, adjust the radio. 2 minutes flies right by.

I do about 30 seconds only regardless of the weather. The only time I take more than 30 seconds are on days the car is covered with snow or if ice needs to be scraped off. But that's only because I need to clean the car first. I've been doing since I got my license in 81.

I never wait. I punch the starter and move and I do that no matter the weather. I did that in my previous car, a Passat 4 motion, and gave it to my son at 159k with the motor still purring. I spend about half a year in the PA poconos where it gets fairly cold and still do it. I'm from the school that believes that the sooner the car warms up the better.

Works for me, YMMV.

As long as you don't slam the the throttle putting it in gear and taking off slow will be fine.
