SURVEY: What best describes your Car/Fuel Eco
SURVEY: What best describes your Car/Fuel Eco
Hey Everyone,
just the everlasting search for the link between our cars and its fuel economy.
there's quite a few options. this will probably apply to the 7ATs only, but 6MTs feel free to comment. the mpg is combined (or overall or based on fill ups, however you prefer to calculate)
updated
so like i've mentioned before I average 16.6 mpg... with a lot of smooth driving (expressways/highways). I'm not red lining the car. I also owned the 08 sedan with everything but the tech and averaged 21-22mpg without even trying.
This passed week I turned off my VDC... and my fuel eco for the same route (but with more traffic and more city driving) is 20.2 combined.
so it got me thinking what was different from my last car besides the engine that is supposed to get the better fuel eco?
and it came down to the tech packaage. My theory is that it's the stupid preview braking that's keeping me on the accelerator more than I should be. The fuel eco is like night and day at this point. I'll let it go off the week and see how it does. So far I started at 290 DTE and it's about 340 DTE after 2 days of driving with the VDC of. i haven't dropped below 19mpg at the moment despite some frustrated highway driving today.
in DS i lose about 0.5 mpg on avg but obviously i don't want to really have to drive with the VDC off so if this is something that's common I might consider asking the dealership to disable the preview braking and see how the fuel eco is.
Preview braking is a feature on the G that monitors the traffic in front of you and pre-pressurizes the brakes. but correct me if i'm wrong, this process buts a "brake" on the engine as it prepares for an abrupt stop... i think...

AWD and RWDs alike.
also if you're car is just the sport then use the sport options, but if you have any trace of the tech package. use the tech

What do you click if you're getting 18 - 20 mpg with a G37xS?
What? No. It pressurizes the brakes so that there won't be "wasted" milliseconds pressurizing the brake lines when you hit the brakes.

sorry AWD loops in there too. I haven't seen any X owners getting anything different RWDs.
I dont think the preview braking monitors the traffic.
And LMAO at the <15. You cant say that for everyone. I get 11.9 and that because I live in NYC. There to much acceleration and braking
If you accelerate slowly, there'll be a huge line behind you cursing you out.
All you NYers correct me if i'm rong but still LMAO at the <15

Yeah it does. It uses the ICC sensor to monitor for objects in front of the car. You know when you have ICC on and it starts beeping at you becuase you're getting too close to the car in front of you? That's how preview braking works except it does it all the time and doesn't beep at you; it just gets the brakes ready.
Taken from page 5-42 of the G Sedan owner's manual:
The ICC system with the preview function identifies the need to apply emergency braking by sensing the vehicle ahead in the same lane and the distance to the vehicle ahead and relative speed from it, it applies the brake pre-pressure before the driver depresses the brake pedal and helps improve brake response by reducing pedal free play.

No i realize that the car has a lot of HP and is a big engine. I just this 16mpg for a v6 is kinda sad. In my mind (and based on the other cars I've owned/driven) the the car should at least show 19mpg mixed highway/city. I mean if a survey can say that the average owner is getting below 17 for a v6...
I just think it's weird cause:
I can get 17mpg in an E55 AMG (supercharged v8 5.5L 5AT)
I actually got 19.5mpg in a an 06 M3 (i6, 333hp 3.2L 6MT)
I had 21mpg in my 08 G Sedan (3.5L 306hp 5AT)
I mean VVEL is supposed to improve economy without sacrificing mpg.
but at least according to the current survey.. there doesn't seem to be a clear link...
yeah I would agree that the MT is the only way you can "control" your mpg. the AT is like fixed and will reproducibly demonstrate certain fuel eco.... it's just odd in this case that some are exp good eco, and some are exp bad eco.
but the MTs can chime in too. I actually wish I could edit the voting structure to add the additional layers...
I mean I'd hate to say it's the tranny that's causing the difference but I've only gotten 20mpg in the coupe 6mt... and i drive that sucker MUCH harder... lol
i guess a top tip is to always buy a stick... always end up with the coupe. lol kidding.
but yeah at the end of the day, this might be looking for a needle in a haystack cause today I avg'd 20mpg with the vdc off. (either that or the ecu re-learned driving habit?)

Love That G!
The automobile that I owned prior to my '09 G sedan was a '02 Toyota Camry. It's V6 engine generated a whopping 192 HP. I could coax 24 MPG city and 30 MPG highway out of it. With the 328 HP VVEL I have 136 more horse power at my disposal and I can still get 23 MPG city and 29 MPG highway with it. I'll take the G anyday!

heck yeah with those numbers.
That pretty well sums up my driving and mileage. The MPG drops a bit when my average speed drops into the mid 20's (city traffic).
