New 6MT Sedan

Hey Everyone,

Just picked up my new 6spd Sedan S a week ago. Now this is my first manual car and after the first day I thought I was getting pretty good at at. However when I goto pull into my garage and I feather the clutch as to not end up though the back wall of the house I notice a burning smell I assume this is from the clutch, would this be because the car is new or am I doing something wrong?

It may just be the "coating" they put on the new engines. My car had a smell like that for about a month or so. I am not really sure when it went away, I only remember having it.

That is what I assumed but being my first manual car I just want to make sure I was not doing anything wrong.

The M6 is what the call in here in Canada, not sure if its the same in the US.

Here are a few pics of my baby sorry about the picture quality they were taken with my blackberry

It's likely just the coating on the engine that has to burn off... I wouldn't worry about it for right now.

It's either the coating on the engine (my M6 had this for a few weeks), or you are "riding" the clutch and heating up the clutch plates. That can also create a smell. Hard to tell now which it was, but likely it was the coating unless you were really gunning it with the engine, unlikely in a parking situation.

yeah no gunning maybe 1500rpms to 2000rpms max and just letting the clutch out slightly to get her moving. My garage is on an incline so hard to just coast into it.

Likely what everyone else is saying about the coating on the engine. My dealer told me that when our cars are shipped from Japan, the engines and underbody are sprayed with a special chemical that protects those areas from the salty sea mist so they don't rust/corrode. He told me it is completely normal to have that burning chemical type smell for the first month or 2. That's exactly how long it lasted and nothing was wrong with my car. Congrats on the new ride!

The anti-rust coating is called cosmoline and is yellowish in color, usually.

typically BMW uses the even numbers for their coupes like the 2 series, 6 series, 8 series, and the Z4, and Z8's.

Yeah, I had that smell too when I first drove it, but it stop now, considering I was in traffic today going between first and second most of the time. But yeah, just learn to know when your clutch engage and disengage and soon you won't be thinking about it.

Anyway, welcome, we have another BS 6MT Sedan in da house!
