One week with the G37XS

Hi all,
I had a Porsche Cayman S that I sold to get a 911 and a 4 door but the 911 purchase got delayed and got a certified Bmw 525 for DD activities

I had the 525 for an year, very boring to drive and seat comfort was average at best and power sucked

I test drove the g37XS, loved it, traded the 525 for the G37Xs

My one week review with the g37xs
1) very very comfy sport seats
2) Love the electronics ( ipod, Nav, Btooth, sat radio, backup camera, voice control etc)
3) Bose is not that bad compared to my beamer base audio
4) Handling: O my , a 4 door sedan that is exciting to drive and very good in turns. I took the same turns at the same speed as in my previous cayman S and the g37Xs was very good and could be even better with summer tires. This car is very confident inspiring in turns and I am sure with Summer rubber it can go even faster around turns
5) transmission: I loved the 7 speed in DS mode and paddles are fun to use , makes the drive less boring
6) Ride quality: very good for a sport sedan
7) Snow mode: I tried the snow mode which sends power 50 -50 to front and rear wheels . The steering felt stiffer in snow mode and I liked the regular mode that is 100% rwd till it needs to send power to front wheel and in this mode the steering feel is light and responsive

I test drove a 335XI too but the G 37 got me more excited , I will still get my 911 someday but the g37xs is a practical comfy car but sill fun fun fun

Infiniti has hit a home run with the G37XS, Love it

Congrats .Truly "fun to drive" sedan and a definite home run. I wouldn't go picking on too many Porsches in the twisties, however. I have test driven the Cayman S and its a great handling car. Just needs more power.

Keep saving for that 911. Worth the wait.

Welcome to the party .

Yes, the Gx is a well balanced and powerful sedan.

Just a clarification on Snow mode. It doesn't lock the car in AWD mode, but rather lets the ECU control torque to the wheels regardless of the accelerator (basically and intelligent traction control switch). Here's the description from the service manual:

If the snow mode is activated, the vehicle speed will not be accelerated immediately based on your original pedal position to avoid the vehicle slip. In other words, ECM controls the rapid engine torque change by controlling the electric throttle control actuator operating speed.

Congrats!

You cannot compare the G37xS with the 525. They are completely different class. I like our G37xS but ride quality, I still prefer the 335. The sportiness and handling, I also prefer the 335. But if you put the cost, then the G37xS will compensate it.

Handling yes, ride quality no. My friend has a 335 with the sport package and those run flat tires make it ride VERY hard IMHO. Maybe its better without the sport, but I doubt it. THose run flat tires suck! Handling wise the 335 is very cool and then there is the power, but to me it was not worth the extra $150 a month.

That an easy fix as soon. As soon as the tires are worn do not buy RFT's. You can buy a donut spare and keep it in your trunk, carry a can of air, and you can also buy an electric air pump and keep that in the car at all times.

BMW=Bunch Money Wasted

BMW FAILS at making a descent interior. Their sooooooo bland, boring, cheap, etc etc. While they aim more at ride quality, handling, power, etc. The interior is still an important factor and at that they fail. I like being in a car that I feel welcomed in and have alot of things to play with

Although Bimmer's are nice drivers, I feel like I'm in a morgue while sitting inside.

That is what I said when you factor the cost. Value for money the G37 is better than the 335. But the handling and performance of the 335 is way better. This is coming from a person who owned and driven both cars. As far as the interior is concern, they are all subjective. I prefer the simplistic elagance of the Bimmer as compared to the Infiniti. The feel and quality, IMHO, is better in the Bimmer.

I think you better double check about the cheapness of the material in the Bimmer before you make some blanket statement. It contradicts almost all the auto mags reviewers. I owned both cars so I think I am in a better position to make some objective judgement. If you want a better interior, go for an Audi instead.

I'm sorry but the interior is quite bland in them. I've been in one when I was deciding on the G or the 3 series. Overall interior, instrument cluster illumination, button setup, etc are nothing but boring. I really don't care about auto magazines. They don't and nor will they ever decide which car I buy and my opinion about it. If you rely on an auto magazine to decide on your opinion of how nice a car's interior is, then you really need to get out more and look around. Everyone has their opinion's and if you think that the 3 series has a nice interior, well hats off to you.

You are correct there only. The interior is bland because it was probably design by engineer with function over styling. But interior wise, and I love my G, my 02 WRX wagon was assemble with better material. BMW, MB and Audi interior are designed with better materials. These materials don't make weird noises as they expand and contract with temperatures changes.

My G makes too many random crack and pops from the interior. Although it has become a lot better of late. My favorite noise used to be the loud "crack" sound that used to originate from the washi trim. Although I may have fixed it using some foam inserts. But it used to happen all the time, even when the car was perfectly still. Now that's quality.

I am just commenting on your blanket statement that the 335 interiors are cheap compared to the G37. The styling may be bland but the materials used are of better quality. The quality materials used is not a subjective opinion because you can see and feel it. The styling is a subjective opinion but I agree with you on this matter. The 335/328 is not flashy as compared to G37 and definitely way behind the Audi A4. I am not basing my decision on the auto mags. It is just one of the tools that will keep me inform. I am also basing my opinion on not just a short test drive but on actual ownership of both cars.
