My 08 G37S is dead at age 207000 miles.

Here are the stats:

Purchased in 2011 with 28k miles for $26k
KBB is $6k now (running)
7.5 sets of tires
6 front brake jobs, 2 rear
3 windshield replacements
3 batteries
front strut failed at 35k miles
oil cooler o-ring leaked at 100k miles
heater hose plastic union failed at 120k miles
Windshield washer pump failed at 180k miles

Annoyances:

steering wheel shudder when hitting the brakes, keeps coming back after a brake job

engine an oily mess. Leaks all over.

Super high road noise

The car eats brakes and tires, but was driven very hard.

Engine started losing its smoothness at 100k miles, got worse and worse. I changed the motor mounts, but that only helped a little. Engine is very harsh and noisy now.

For the last 3 years, had to fill coolant reservoir once a month. Never could find where it was leaking. But could smell coolant. Figured it was one of those cheap hose clamps buried somewhere.Turns out, it was the water pump. The leak was from the weep hole behind the AC compressor. Only leaked when it was running. Finally, it started gushing. Big job to replace it. I will get to it some day, replace the timing chain and oil gallery gaskets, then its going on Craigslist.

This was probably the most trouble free car I ever owned. Not too impressed with the new Q60, although the acceleration is a huge improvement. The car is unremarkable. So, changing over to a Lexus RC. Way better car.

I have the same car, has 150K, bought it with 70K in 2014, still running good overall, though it's starting to have an issue where it doesn't always start up when you press the ignition button, I figure it's either the clutch starter safety switch near the clutch pedal or the starter is going bad. It's still running on the original struts and shocks! I'll finally be changing those next month. I'll probably go the Lexus route too when the time comes, possibly a beamer, who knows. It's a been a great car, always fun to drive.

 

Why not just drop another engine into it and call it a day? There are tons of low mileage, used VQ37VHR's out there.

 

A 13 year old, stock, daily driven G37 Coupe with over 200K miles? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say a brand new Lexus is an upgrade.

Then again, I have a friend with an '08 G37S Coupe, and it's still a highly desirable, rewarding car, so... it's all relative.

Hey OP, after all these years of living with that car, and assuming AT... did you prefer the 5AT with the shorter rear gears over the revised drivetrain in 2009? My Canadian friend does.

Time to let it die. Not sure how you find the RC better than the Q60 though...It's a old lady coupe.....

 

The RC is just very uncomfortable IMO with some questionable styling cues. LOL. If you are in love with the coupe, why not just find another low mileage one? They are around, they are good cars and they are relatively cheap

 

I havent driven the RC but then again I don't really feel the need to. I do like the front end design though and that's about it.

 

im glad to hear it hasn’t caused you many problems though, RIP. Makes me want one even more I’m still looking, hopefully within a month or two I’ll take one home. My G35 is probably on the way out it has over 240k atm.

 

I didn’t realize anyone replied to this. Oh well sorry! Would have replied back more.

I went ahead and repaired the car. Replaced the water pump, galley gaskets and timing chain. BTW, galley gaskets were blown. No codes no symptoms.

Took 4 full days to fix. Hardest part was getting the harmonic balancer off. The rest was not too bad, just took a lot of time. I was slow and careful.

So, it ran perfectly afterwards. The repairs went well. Still love driving the G even though I got a 2016 lexus RC. Didn’t really want to sell it. There is just something about it.

I had started plans to make it into a hot rod. Seriously considering a Stillen supercharger.

My friend took the car to run a few errands. Totaled it! OMG. Was hit from behind sitting in traffic.

Hit in the drivers side quarter and that really is the end of it now. Very sad.

 

This it what I rigged up to get the HB bolt out. It took like 500 ft lbs to remove, yet the torque spec is 33 ft lbs. nuts.

And, old timing chain was fine. No need to replace at 208k miles. Tensioner was only half way out, just a couple clicks more than the new chain.

 

When I researched the car back in ‘11, people were complaining about the clutch on the 6MT, so I avoided those. Also, people were complaining about the 7 speed transmission in the 09 for hunting and harsh downshift. There was lots of TSB on that one. So, I specifically looked for an 08 with the 5 spd. It never missed a beat all those miles.

Gotta say, the 8 speed in the RC is 10x more awesome. So, im sure the newer INFINITI transmissions are too.

 

Its got about the same acceleration, but 10x smoother, ultra super quiet, interior quality is 10x the G37 and Q60. New Q60 looks like a Hyndai Sonata.. Don’t have the presence it should. That’s just my opinion

 

i actually just bought an 08 G37S coupe with 83,900 miles and a muffler delete for very cheap. Everything is mechanically perfect (almost) so it’s good to see what time intervals things failed on your car as a reference to prepare myself for my car. I’m thinking of getting the galley gaskets done as preventative maintenance this year just to be safe.
