IPL 6MT or M3?
IPL 6MT or M3?
I have dilemma and I know people on here may be biased but try to be open minded on this because I am very indecisive and need to make a decision by tomorrow night 4/10.
I currently own an original/stock 2012 IPL Coupe with only 34,000 miles. Zero accidents, like new condition, second owner, grey out/black in.
I have been looking to sell it and within five days I found a buyer for $26k. I have plenty of equity in the car and thought I'd mix it up and get a 2013 manual BMW M3. I've had them before so very familiar with them.
Let's please steer clear of negative comments or get into a debate on BMW or the M3 right now. That's not the reason for this post.
I am trying to determine if the IPL would be more desirable over time or do I take the $26k right now and run with it? I bought it for roughly the same price one year ago.
I am not finding much information by the way of numbers of stock/original IPL 6MT's specifically on the road now but my research indicates there may be few left and of those that are, may not even be stock at this point. Do you agree? Frankly, I have been researching how many IPL 6MTs were built each year but having zero luck on that!
Given this, would you keep the IPL long-term hoping it may continue to be more desirable (considering manuals in general are going away in the US) or would you take the $26k offer? I'm not convinced the IPL 6MT will increase in value anytime soon, but I do believe the IPL 6MT specifically will lose value much slower.

If you're for long term desirability, I'd go with the M3. It's a performance car that everybody wants, and if you have one in perfect condition, you'd have more buyers for it. Whereas the G37 is a relatively anonymous car and very few know about the IPL version. So I'd think that in the future, you may end up with a more rare car, but so few potential buyers, that it would be a hard sell. And of course, if market dictates the price, then a larger market holds up the values of the M3 better in the long run with it being a household-name sports car. Just my opinion.
Thank you, thank you! I have been racking my brain on this and what you say makes complete sense. Others are welcome to reply.
Thanks

A graphite shadow red interior 6mt is/was my dream car, since I am a huge skyline fanboy and the g37 is originally a V36 Skyline, direct successor of the R34 skyline after the G35.
So yea it's a Nissan factory built unit, probably the last sport focused skyline from Nissan, but as a poster above said, the car and its lineage is not very well known by the car enthusiast community. If it's pedigree were better understood it would be akin to the spirit r rx7's.
Nissan did make one blunder or a couple at least with the IPL which was not using their vq30dett twin turbo vq instead of the naturally aspirated VQ37vhr that was used. The vhr did put out 348hp with a retune and new exhaust, which is pretty good for a naturally aspirated high compression v6 engine. The vhr tech which was first introduced in the g37 was responsible for these gains in nissans VQ. However I would have been happier with a force induction VQ build instead and I wish Nissan would had instead used the VQ30DETT twin turbo instead.
IPL means infiniti performance line so a better performing twin turbo should have been used ideally. Unless the black sport is going to get a performance build, the IPL models are the last skylines to get a sport focus from the Nissan factory since the r34.
You can check out the twin turbo thread in the other cars section of this forum to get a better understanding of the g37's heritage, pedigree, and evolution.

By the way the Nissan v6 is an award winning engine and is said to have bullet proof reliability.
If I were you I would not part with the IPL, I'd keep it stock as well, unless I was going to do further performance mods to bring out its racing performance pedigree

Not here to say whether you should buy a m3 or not. But I would definitely take 26k and run then decide what you want later. Just saying, so if you want to leave the IPL, then take the 26k or you might regret when you want to sell later. I have seen many low mileage IPL 6MT selling for same prices as auto.
Thank you for all your responses so far! I am learning towards selling the IPL and taking the cash and holding out for an M3 (E92) with low milage.

Love the G37 and what it offers for the cash but gill kind of touched on it, but to go further, Infiniti/Nissan missed a golden opportunity to take the IPL and make it special. Not to mention, it wasn't branded or advertised as really being different than any other G. TBH, I had no clue what it was until I started looking into getting a G37; and once I learned what was included in the trim, I was kind of let down.
Like Radio mentioned, the M line is a household name - they're the cool kid on the block. Whether it be performance, looks, comfort, handling, tune-ability the M can do it all and retain it's value. I mean, a 20 year old, 125,000 mile E30 is worth about $10,000...
Infiniti released the Q line and G37 prices dropped 15-20k over night. I hate to say it but for what you're looking for, the M is the best option.

friends e30 m3 purchased at 20somethingK a decade ago is now worth 50k+...
he was offered that much so the market is there...
all I see from the g line including the ipl is a decline in resale... worse when the q series came out...

Engine performance plays a big role in the success of m and amg and rs branding. Until Nissan does something like that they will be stuck playing catch up. Now with the new motors hopefully they offer something cool.

26k is a great offer!
