Rust in car normal?

Hi guys,

So I was cleaning my car and noticed that the rails on my A-pillar had small spots of rust on them. I pulled off the A-pillar panel and took the following pictures. Is this normal? At first I thought there was a leak into my car, but now I'm starting to think that the metal just wasn't coated properly and is spot rusting. What do you guys think? Pictures are of my passenger side A-pillar with the panel removed.

Meh, put it back together and check it in a year. You could always tape off the area and spray a coat of rust stop on it but I doubt that's necessary.

They sell chemical in spray or paint form you just roll onto rust and it converts the rust back and stops future rust. Home Depot and Lowe's has it

I can see a crack in the paint running along the rust dots. That's not normal per say. Seems like metal is starting to oxidize underneath the paint. Ignore it for a long time and it could be trouble. Address it before it gets to that point and it's a pain, but it's taken care of.

Infiniti offers an unlimited mileage/7 year corrosion warranty. Go show them if you still fall under that time frame.

That minor rust wouldn't qualify for warranty.

That's exactly what it looked like to me too. I just ended up lightly sanding and paint the area. Just worried that that there might be other areas in the car with the same problem, but oh well. Out of sight, out of mind.

larryw, do you always remove your A pillar covers when cleaning? If so, that's pretty darn thorough. I thought I was finicky.

No. Actually the way I discovered it was I was cleaning the glass from the outside and at the perfect angle I could see a rust between the space of the a pillar and the windshield.
