I think I just experienced the smell while getting on the freeway just now. In hindsight I remember smelling it at least two other times before but looked down and notice recirculation was off, so I figured the filter didn't catch the fumes from a smokey car ahead of me. Could it possibly be the cabin filter is tapping out? I've never changed mine in the 3yrs I've had the car.

If it's only under more aggressive acceleration, could it be the clutch slipping?

I doubt it. I changed my own cabin filter about 2-3 weeks ago. I smelled the burning before and after the filter change.

I really only notice it during hard acceleration and even then, its only occasional.

I don't think so. My previous Q50 sedan had a different burning off smell. This was outside the car after driving.

I think oil bypassing the ring and burning off. My oil level is low but not low enough to be considered bad based on Infiniti's oil consumption chart.

Still not sure how it's getting into the cabin though.

Ya know I would get a smell on occasion when I had my '08 I assumed there were cars/ trucks around me burning their clutches and what not. But it seemed to be more frequent in later years as I began to notice that it was happening often.
In my '12 I haven't noticed any burning smells.

Is this happening in manual cars only? I haven't smelled a single thing in my auto and I tend to terrorize my car on Coffee N Car cruises.

Just tired it again today and it's happening even after merging onto the freeway.

I was cruising on the freeway at 50mph due to traffic. No smell. The moment I tilt the sunroof, the burning smells enter the cabin. Even though re-circulate is activated.

I'm guessing when I open the sunroof, all windows closed, it's creating some type of vacuum pressure forcing the burning smell to enter the cabin somehow.

When I closed the sunroof. No smell.

Man, this could be caused by so many things. I'd have to say once your car is to operating temperature you should just nose around under the hood and try to smell where its coming from.

i suggest climbing under your car and inspect for any kind of an oil leak be it engine, power steering, or trans. other culprits of a burning smell can also be attributed to ****ty brake pads or ****ty tires as they round the loop of a freeway on ramp.
