Stupid Tinting Question
To start I live in IL so I can legally have 35% all around.
I know cops have contraptions to check for tinting that goes on top of the window that is half rolled down. Since I have a coupe does that mean I am good to go illegal on the back windows and back windshield because they can't really measure those.
Thinking of going a staggered 35% on fronts and 20% on backs. Obv. would prefer 20% all around but don't want to get bugged with a ticket.
Thanks in advance!

To my knowledge it's only illegal to tint your front windows and windshield darker then 35%. I'm almost sure you'd be okay going 20% on the rear windows and windshield, but don't mark my words on the I'm going by NJ law with that answer lol
Here in AZ the rear can be as dark as you want as long as the front are 35 percent, I went with 35 percent front two windows and the rear with a 15 percent. Top tint on from windshield strip on top of the line to be legal. Check your local laws you might be fine
Yeah that's always been the round about law except in like FL and NM I think. The rears and sunroof can be anything you want, the driver and passenger windows cant be darker than 35% and the windshield cant be tinted at all below the little visor line. Some people tint the entire windshield 50% so it darkens the interior a tad and they have no way of checking it since the pillars are too big for their little handheld checker to get around.
According to this website, Illinois allows only 35% for front/back windows and the back windshield. Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the front windshield.
In NJ, anything goes for rear windows and the back windshield, and any tint is illegal in the front.

If you go 35% you should be fine. I had LIMO on my car...and loved it, yet I paid 2 tickets for it...

I looked up all of the statues etc... There is actually an allowable variance of 5%. Technically 30% is the legal limit all around in IL if the cop breaks out a meter. "On vehicles where none of the windows to the rear of the driver's seat are treated in a manner that allows less than 35% light transmittance, a nonreflective tinted film that allows at least 35% light transmittance, with a 5% variance observed by any law enforcement official metering the light transmittance, may be used on the vehicle windows immediately adjacent to each side of the driver."

Like I said before, if you really want the interior darker, you can tint the windshield 50% and just get the legal 30% all around. You'll pass their test every time but the light coming in from the windshield will be less and will be much darker on the inside. Its a win/win

In most states, tinting the entire windshield is illegal.

Yep, totally illegal in I think every state, absolutely. But I've said it 3 times now in this same thread, they cant check the tint level on the windshield with the tool they use. I had 50% on my Lexus SC windshield and 25% on all the rest, in a mid summer day the car stayed 20+ degrees cooler on the inside, worth every penny. Visibility at night is practically the same, 50% is hardly any shading at all, just enough to block some UV's.
