Why so hard to find a decent coupe without sunroof?

Hi, new member here and planning on getting a coupe real soon.

I've been looking for a few months for a sub 50k mi, 09-10(due to the RCA jacks ),,Silver or a Blue coupe without a sunroof, but having a really hard time finding one. Can someone help steer me to the right direction? 7AT or 6MT... doesn't matter TBH.

The reason why I don't want a sunroof is due to me wanting this to be a project car. The car is heavy already, and not having a sunroof would help with weight and most importantly, the center of gravity as the top of the car is the worst place to put on weight...according to my friend who has a new M3 without one.

Doesn't matter if it is sports or not, because the Akebono BBK, Viscous LSD will be swapped for other options, especially the LSD with a Quafe. Probably gonna go with some aftermarket lightweight 18" wheels as well. No FI, gonna go full out NA. Maybe 4.08 gear swap...

Is this a stupid idea? Maybe just get a 370, but I really like the looks of the G coupe.

That's not true.

You can find some without sunroofs. The premium pack comes with a sunroof though so you will get literally zero options without a sunroof.

Because neither manufacturers nor customers like base model stripped down cars. They don't sell well. Models without sunroof are not common. Good luck in your search.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see where any weight savings will be gained without a sunroof. The whole assembly weighs less than 15 lbs. if that much nor would it have any affect on the center of gravity.

I've never seen a G Coupe without a sunroof anywhere, not to say they don't exist, but I've never seen one. Good luck on that search.

having a moonroof affects the center of gravity of the vehicle, but it affects the rigidity of the vehicle more so. the roof structure is more rigid without a big hole in it. its why Nissan claims a performance reason for not having a moonroof in the 350/370z. i personally wanted one when i had my 350z but you couldn't get one. if you're not tracking your car then you won't notice the extra rigidity and lower center of gravity on the streets.

^ +1. OP - if you are able to find a G37 w/out sunroof it will be the base 7AT model. and thus it will not come with any of the 'S' functional performance upgrades. i know you mentioned a project car so i expect changes to suspension/brakes/wheels, but had you planned on swapping steering racks and differentials? the base 7AT will not come the sport steering ratios or VLSD.

being concerned with weight and CoG is great for tracking project cars, so assuming tracking is a priority i would go with a 370Z over the G37 base 7AT (as far as late-model Nissan products go). you'll have less work and expense to get the 370 just how you want it. and the 370 starts out much lighter which is a plus. of course there are lots of other options out there, but between the 370 and G37 the choice is clear (aesthetics notwithstanding).

Not really stripped down. You can get a 09 Journey with dual climate control, power seats for both driver and passenger, keyless entry/start and 6-disc changer without Sunroof. (No premium package). Found one a few months back but had too many miles...Should have bought it.

It is not 15 lbs. I heard it is closer to 60-70 lbs on the top of the vehicle. Having the weight on the top equals to about to about 140 lbs to the front, if talking about physics here and balance. I passed on a 90k Journey with no sunroof.

Might have to do that...but I think one from the factory would be better. And more reliable..besides, it costs way too much to change the headliner.

Good points...tempted but just like the looks of the G 1000x better.. The steering ratio, I dont really mind, but the differential will be upgraded to a Quafe LSD.

Simply, I want the baddest and fastest all around NA G37 coupe there is. Silly, I know... but this is what I want. This requires no sunroof. Ask any M3 driver without a SR why they chose to not to get one. Also with proper gearing, I think this car has some serious potential.

There are videos of a 370z with 4.08 gears on YouTube smashing most (even a 335i with JB4 chip) at the 1/4 mile.

edit: found video

I want the fastest all around NA coupe there is, without drastic weight reduction such as stripping of insulation and seats. This can be acheived by altering the suspension, vehicle's center of gravity and rigidness(benefiting greatly from no sunroof), and neck snapping acceleration from gear swaps, reducing rotational weight: smaller lightweight wheels (18"), lighter driveshaft, and breathing mods. Of course, my top speed will suffer though due to a final drive swap.

Whether it's for silly things such as bragging rights & pride or street performance/track, I'm not too sure but this is what I want. If you disagree with my choice to do so, then fine. Not here to argue. Looking for a push in the right direction to find one without a sunroof and this looks like the perfect place for advice.

As stated, the vast majority of G37 coupes built have a sunroof. The G37 is a luxury grand touring coupe so very, very few potential buyers (like you for example) are concerned with the additional weight and loss of structural rigidity that comes with a sunroof. Most buyers value the functionality, resale value, or cool factor much, much more.

Good luck with the search, I hope you find one and go forward with your project. Sounds fun.
