G37 IPL Muffler Delete

Hi Everyone,

I've been following this forum for a while and have decided to register so I can ask questions about my 2011 G37 IPL (and hopefully be able to answer some as well).

I love the car but one thing I wish was true was that the exhaust was a little louder. I've seen many G's with muffler deletes but never an IPL so I was wondering if anyone had experience with this.

Thanks

Please don't do a muffler delete. If you want louder just get and axle back. A lot of ppl who do muffler deletes end up regretting doing it.

I was in your shoes the minute I test drove my ipl. My first thought and I even expressed it to the salesman: "it's so freaking quiet." A week after I installed an axle back. Night and day. You don't need a full exhaust system to make the car louder. The ipl already has an H pipe which is wider than a stock G (which is a Y pipe) and the mid pipe is also wider. Right off the bat the axle back combined with the ipl's H and mid pipe was even louder and deeper than when the axle back was previously on my old X coupe.

I have an IPL and am thinking about keeping the IPL muffler in place and mating it to a FI non-resonated X-pipe I have from an old setup. I'm wondering myself what kind of sound that will produce...

I would advise against chopping the mufflers. You'd be better off running Z1 HFCs or another aftermarket brand and chopping your resonators. Keep the mufflers there to give you that nice IPL tone now with a bit more sound.

Has anyone performed a resonator delete on an IPL? Possibly even swapped the OEM cats for HFCs or test pipes?

i was originally running a muffler delete on my ipl and personally i think it sounded good. definitely loud though but mean as hell at WOT. you can check my build thread for a video. it was a nice $200 solution to the quiet ipl exhaust. now i have berk test pipes + muffler delete and its just too much, sounds nasty but its obnoxious so a catback is next on my list.

Just throw an ebay axle back on it and call it a day. A muffler delete sounds awful, I drove around without my muffler for about half an hour between taking it off and getting my new mufflers put on, it was bad.

Genuinely curious for the people with the top speed axle back saying not to do a muffler delete: you say don't do a muffler delete, but what is the difference between the top speed axle back and a muffler delete? I have the axle back and it has no muffler, just nice fancy piping, which, essentially is a muffler delete? Not trying to be a smartass or anything, I actually just want to know as I have the axleback.

To the OP, either the axleback or the muffler delete would sound essentially the same (you're replacing the stock muffler with straight piping). With that being said, both sound good. Both sound relatively loud. IMO not obnoxiously loud. It was still somewhat quiet in the cabin for my taste just due to the sound deadening for luxury purposes I'm sure, but I like a loud exhaust.

I currently have the axleback + Berk HFC and now it's a little too loud lol

Regretted what? The eBay mufflers? They're a bit loud, but no where near as loud as a muffler delete.

A muffler delete will sound raspy.

An axle back is NOT a muffler delete as you still have mufflers. The mufflers are smaller than the stock canister, yes, but its not the same as running a muffler delete.

I ran my car back to back stock, without a muffler and then with the eBay axle back and there is clearly a difference. When I drove around without a muffler it was kinda raspy sounding. The axle back gave it a much deeper tone and made it a bit quieter.

I really like the sound of the Tanabe axle back which will probably be my next mod. I have seriously considered the muffler delete but i feel the Tanabe will satisfy me the most, with a little patience on my part to get them and even at the extra expense over a muffler delete. Tanabe sounds great and looks good too.

Ah, fair enough... I was under the impression that the axleback was just nice straight piping with no muffler, sure looks like it doesn't have one. Thanks for the insight!

The axleback definitely has a very nice tone and is not raspy. It also retains the nice VQ growl

Yeah, the eBay axle backs (TopSpeed, Manzo, Beluga) are all the same and on the coupe delete the single muffler unit from stock and give it two (much) smaller mufflers instead.
