would a g37 S coupe be ok in snow?
That's a pretty blanket statement, you obviously don't know all the things that go into an S package on a coupe and you also don't know the pricing on AWD or S packages if you think it's a "waste of money", yet heavy and bulky AWD system is not a waste of money in your opinion. Someone who doesn't live close to North Pole might say "I wouldn't waste my money on AWD infiniti, just get an STI instead". Also not all Z's are "sporty" as they come with various packages just like Gs, nor do they come with a backseat. Just two cents from someone who owns both AWD and S models.

My point is this, If you need your car to get to work and you live where snow is an issue, X is the only consideration. You may be able to manage for a while with rwd but you will need AAA when you inevitably get stuck in a parking lot.
FWIW, I live in southern Ontario, Canada and drive an S coupe(RWD) daily. With some 18 inch winters on, I have, for the most part, not had any problems in the snow. We also got some pretty bad storms this winter but it seemed like all cars were having difficulty then.
i have had zero issues with an average snow fall similar to you. the car has never gotten stuck even though where i live does nothing with the roads (main road sometimes sees a truck but maybe 4 days out of 50 with snowfall). My drive was over a foot thick sheet of ice and snow since we didnt have a melt this year till just recently. with my RWD i would set out on my street and end up 3 houses down from me in the wrong direction regardless of tires. I care about my job to much to leave it up to chance. Most work days this winter was me sitting alone for about 20-60 min before people were getting there. But most people don't have my work ethic. Having lived in Canada i know they do a hell of alot more with the roads then where i am now also.
So I've been trying to find the elusive g37 xS coupe forever now. I'm about to give up and just go for the normal S version which is RWD. Would this car be OK in northeast US snow? Where I'm from, we never get more than 1 foot of snow and it would only be for about 2-3 months at most. If I get winter tires, should I be OK? Anybody else run a similar set up?
that being said this is like maybe 6 days out of a whole year that you are f*ckd
and for that reason i went with an x

a guy that gets it. because no one likes sleeping at work
S is slow!? First off you are wrong, second...he is talking about driving in the snow...who the hell is driving fast in the snow!? The Z costs more money and probably would not handle as well in the snow simply because of the extra weight the G brings. I'll admit these are not exactly the fastest breed of cars, but by no means are they slow
I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada so I know my winter driving quite well. I just got a 2011 XS and it is a dream to drive in the snow. There are times where I don't think the car would do well if it were any lower (mine is stock X height). I can't imagine driving this car with only RWD. Winter tires are must here as well. IMO, you will get annoyed driving a RWD and fighting the gas every time you accelerate. Get an X and you will be very happy in the snow!
I had the same challenge in terms of finding an xS coupe. If that's what you want, I'd suggest finding one of the out of state dealers that brings in a lot of CPO coupes. For example, Airport Infiniti and Infiniti of Akron (both in Ohio) sporadically bring in a bunch of x and xS coupes. One of them has a black 2012 xS right now. My local dealership never had any and wasn't responsive when I asked them to find me one.
On the snow end, I can't comment on RWD G's i the snow but I can say that my xS with snow tires was pretty awesome this past winter. Like many, we had a bad winter and it would sink in how good the car was when I'd see people having trouble taking off at stop lights or getting stuck pulling into their driveways. I agree with the other posters about ground clearance. Even in my xS I'd unavoidably hit snow with the front end or hear it hitting the undercarriage.
I did drive a Mustang GT with snow tires through two winters in Buffalo, so I can say it's feasible but not enjoyable.

Anyways, I agree with blizzak tires will be fine as long as you don't drive like an idiot. I have never been stuck with lake effect/snow belt snow every winter. My RWD has become a plow when I had no choice coming home from work during a storm. Thank fully the shape of the nose can plow it well.

I have a '12 G Sport vert and currently with the Potenza Summer tires. I live in NC so we virtually see no snow, ice except for couple days. I do some travel north to KY, OH (thru WV mountains) and plan to swap out tires in the winter. If I live in the north I would definitely get Blizzaks. I haven't been able to get consistent answer from the tire proffesionals on whether driving on the Blizzaks in 50 degree winter days in NC will prematurely wear out the tires and if there might be a better tire option for me.
