G37X got rear-ended. Is the pwertrain alright?
Hi myg37
My G37X was recently rear ended by a pick up truck. I had my foot on the brake at the moment of impact and the car was in Drive (auto). The car moved forward a little bit (less than feet, if that) approximately.
It was minor body damage. The only part of the bumper which was damaged was where the license plate of the truck dug into the bumper and ripped it up, it was an inch long vertical tear. Beyond that, I don't even see the bumper out of alignment. Just some scratches. I am rather shocked at how resilient the bumper is because my fiancee and I thought the car had been totaled whe we were struck.
There is virtually no body damage apart from the rip. I am sure deep inside the brackets and the clips may be broken but on the outside, apart from the rip, there is nothing put of place or looks damaged.
With all that said, I am worried if the impact stressed and damaged the tranny. It is an AWD car after all. What do you guys think are the chances of damage to the tranny?

Sorry to hear about you being rear ended.
With that said how do you expect members of a forum to perform a diagnosis of your vehicle?
I assume you have a police report and notified your insurance agent?
I would also assume your insurance should cover a through inspection by an Infiniti dealer and a qualified body shop.
Your insurance company should be able to recover those charges from the other insurance company
Good luck

Did you drive it home afterwards? If so and if everything felt & sounded the same, I'd say you are probably fine. The noise made by plastic bumpers colliding & the unexpected jolt felt can exaggerate the actual force of the impact. Considering the minor damage, I'd say your drivetrain is likely fine.
OP, are you asking if the powertrain was damaged from impact, or from being forced forward due to the impact?
Also, are you concerned about the transmission or engine when you ask this?

Powertrain would include both and more parts. I'm sure they should be fine since you were in drive with foot on brake instead of in park. I'm speculating the brakes locked the wheels and you were pushed because the tires lost grip from the impact. Make sure you see a doctor and worry less about the car!
I had a similar event happen to me some months ago. While at a stop light I was rear ended by a older Cadillac deVille. Took a pretty hard wallop but thankfully the damage to my bumper cover was minimal:
Attachment 110187
Being a older Caddy his bumper was dry rotten and didn't fare too well. In fact, if you look closely at the pic, that little square left a gaping hole on his bumper.
As for the power train, I have the 5AT and didn't have not one problem as a result of the impact. In my opinion, only in extremely hard impacts where the frame is actually damaged would you have power train issues. Minor "fender bender" type impacts shouldn't result in major adverse effects.
