Vinyl on grill
Vinyl on grill
Good Morning, i've finally built up the cajones to DIY vinyl wrapping my grill and it came out horrible. I waited 3 weeks for the wrap, my gloss black ripped on me when i was stretching through the slats, and i was left with no choice but the brushed color i had gotten for the interior, overall its horrible in my thinking wish i took it to a professional, i've been lurking the DIY thread involving blnewt and the vinyl pros but i certanly am no pro! if anyone knows any shops around LA that can do a professional job please let me know!
What material did you use? 3M?
Using a quality vinyl is paramount in achieving good results. The fact that you said you waited 3 weeks to get vinyl makes me get the feeling you bought no name vinyl from China (or a very bad seller). Cheap vinyl is very difficult to work with and can tear when stretching. If this is the case, I recommend purchasing 3M Scotchprint 1080 and giving it another shot.

Oh wow, then I'm not sure. 3 weeks seems like a long time to receive a product, perhaps there were extenuating circumstances.
I have had good experiences using 3M vinyl to conform to shapes using a good amount of heat and patience. The grille is an intricate shape though, so maybe it's worth having a pro wrap it for you.
Thank you for sharing you experience, I have been looking into doing this myself.

yeah, although it was my first time using vinyl on anything, had the tool they provided and a blowdryer, if it's less than $100 to get a pro to wrap it then i'm sold!
I'm from San Diego and drove up to Santa Ana to have mine done. I vinyl wrapped the roof, side mirrors and grille. The side mirrors didn't hold up well, but the grille seems to be holding up fine. I can give you his information if you want to contact him. It was only $60 for the grille. I've attached a photo of mine and his facebook page. Sorry if the photo is side ways.
Good luck!

Yep, he provides everything. He uses 3M and has all sorts of colors. He does it out of his garage. So you just hang out in his garage while he works on it. I imagine the grill won't take long. He's a cool guy.
Hope this helps.

Thank you sir, first time vinyl'er the grill isn't the brightest idea haha, but your CF wrap looks amazing i must say $60 bux is a no brainer hopefully he can take off the old wrap and apply the new one...
The thinner the vinyl the better...but why go to all that trouble when you can Plasti-Dip the grill with Spray and be done with it. I did it in April or May and it's just great. I hear you can peel it off and , if it chips, respray the section. So far no chips. I put 5 coats on and it's super. Took an hour. $6.00
Simply mask off with tape and a little newspaper....do the coats with 10 minutes in between . Not too close , just like a dusting coat each time....Long strokes...like painting a model car.... and any overspray on the body will rub off with your finger.
So simple..Tape off the emblem too. It works great.
I bought 4 cans and only used almost 1. Guys here have done their wheels too. That's in Philly where it snows.

It really comes down to personal choice and what look you are going for, but these are a few of the common reasons people choose vinyl over Plastidip regardless of price and installation effort.
