Gas gauge issues
so here's the scoop:
I recently had the same gas tank issue as some other members here in the forum, where the gauge would show a certain amount of gas, when really it was a different amount in the tank, ALSO, my gas tank would cap out at how much gas i could fill (1/2 tank max). i have taken my car into infiniti for service on the gas filling issue 3 times already, and it's still happening, what should i do from here? i live in California if that helps with any advice any one might have...
side note: the car wasn't purchased directly from Inifiniti, i got it from carmax, but i purchased the warranty through infiniti in case that helps...
thanks in advanced for any input!

I have the same issue when the gas stops filling at about 1/2 or 3/4 tank.
Options.
1. Keep going back to the dealer as long as you're under warranty and hope that something may fix it.
2. Hold the lever in place yourself instead of putting the clip on and letting it go.
3. Move over a pump when it happens.
4 (ehhhh)..Take the nozzle out of the tank for about a minute or two and then start filling up again.

i doubt i have this problem but just wondering because i didnt know this was a problem for our car is how do you know this is happening to you when your gauge is not accurate? Just by looking at how much it cost when you fill up?
I wonder if there is a DIY to recalibrate/fix it?
Both my infiniti's do this when I fill them, I just thought the problem was the pump I was using. certain pumps at the station I go to don't do this. My EX35 had the fuel guage show E one time when it had over a quarter tank in it, I filled it all the way and it still showed "E" so i took it to the dealership, they replaced a faulty fuel sensor.
Well there is a D.I.Y fix for this. Check the link below but don't do this if you are still under warranty.

That's why I think my fuel gauge is off. Whenever it says "**** to empty," I can only put 15 gallons in. In fact, I have NEVER been able to put in more than 15.5 gallons. For that reason, I thought I had a 16 gallon tank for the longest time LOL (I know, fail on my part).

The normal amount of reserve fuel is not the same thing as problems with a faulty gauge. The car has a few gallons left after reading empty as a reserve fuel amount to keep you from running out. Most people only get 15 to 17 gallons in the car when the gauge reads empty.
If you have a real issue, the gauge doesn't correspond to the amount of fuel actually in the tank. For example mine only reads just less than half when I fill it completely. It starts registering low fuel when there's just under half a tank. And it fluctuates up and down throughout the tank of fuel being used.
For those who have had the car successfully repaired for this condition, did they replace one or both sensors?

I only needed to replace the one on the passenger side.

Awesome Terry, I was hoping someone would say that. I opened up both sides of mine and cleaned the contacts on them. It seemed to work perfectly for one or 2 tanks and then got worse. So I'm looking to replace. Found used ones off of a wrecked G that'll save me money but the driver side one they will only sell as a complete unit with the fuel pump so it's considerably more expensive.
How did you tell which one is bad? Did you do a continuity test or something?

I heard this happens because G's are weird with their gas. I read somewhere on here that "sometimes it doesn't let you fill up fully because the gas flows too quickly and you have to keep pressing for the gas to go even though it makes the clicky sound" (or something along those lines). I've actually heard elsewhere that if you do that this is the exact issue that comes up and it's better to just stop pumping gas and go on till you need gas again.
Is that true? I've never had this problem yet so I'm just curious.

I used to have a 2003 350Z and my gauge started to act up. I replaced one fuel level sensor and it fixed my problem half way. I replaced the other one and it completely fixed it. I ran out of gas twice in my Z before I got it fixed.

can any one give any advice on what to do if this persists to happen, besides continuing to take it back? thanks!
