Help: Need input from those that installed OEM (DIY or 3rd party)
Help: Input on oem spoiler install/fitment(DIY or 3rd party)
OK..Of course we buy the pricey OEM spoiler to get the perfect (from the factory) fitment. Well..today, seeing as I couldn't access my tools (proper drill and bit mainly) and being anxious, I had the local dealer install the spoiler.
As mentioned above, I bought the OEM spoiler for that perfect fitment. Also paid the dealer to install. So, you could say I did everything by the book. However, I feel that the fitment is less than stellar. In my mind, it should look like it came from the factory that way given the steps I've taken. However, that is not the case. My thought is that it should sit flush on the trunk (no gaps). This is not the case. On the highest point of the trunk (the center) it is flush but as the trunk arches slightly, there is about 1/16 gap. Then it is flush towards the ends again. Also, I believe the double sided tape should not be visible. But in my case it is visible around the edges near the corners as if they placed it too close to the edge. My impression is this is a shoddy install but maybe my expectations are too high. Based on that, I'm asking for the input of those who have installed the OEM spoiler after the fact. Is this a botched job or is this normal.
(As an aside, I am having them replace the spoiler either way as they chipped it in two places, I assume from a drop or similar....the possible shoddy install is just more ammunition)
Aside from the chips, I'm highly disappointed with this fitment and hoping its not the norm. Please tell me if this seems right or if you could provide pics of your OEM spoiler install. I'd post pics but its dark now and I will be heading back to the dealer asap tomorrow
Btw: to add insult to injury...I've just completed a 3 day detail a few days back. I told them not to wash..they never have in past at my request. This time the service rep tells me "I know you requested no wash but I told them to wash it anyway.I couldn't return it to you with all the hand prints and shavings from the install. It was so clean when you brought it in so I didn't feel right returning it that way". I'm thinking, why the **** would you take it upon yourself to go against my instruction and then admit to it when you could have easily picked up the phone to check what I want to do (for the record, I would have taken it dirty as I already expected they would leave a mess and planned to wash it myself upon return)

There is a layer of double sided tape, that is how thick your gap should be. The chips are no good, the ends ding up real easy before it's installed. I used some touch-up paint so you don't notice unless you get real close.
When I say gaps, I mean I can literally slide something (like a thin pamphlet) underneath. I can push the spoiler down to make it flush then it pops back up
About the chips...yes I can touch up the raw edge but there is still material missing. Its not acceptable. The spoiler as everyone knows is not cheap. It did not come in chipped and since they are getting paid to do the work it is their responsibility to handle it with care or rectify the issue should a mistake occur

you got an installation issue... sounds like they might be a little shady... i just got mine done too and its perfectly flush... mine is OEM too btw.. just got it installed by the dealer on a heck of a deal this saturday...

I agree with you, if you paid (big bucks probably) the dealer to install they should have not chipped it or incorrectly installed it. My guess is they drilled the holes a little off and the only fix is a new trunk and start over ...... that's not gonna happen.
Well...the install price was 90 something so not too bad. However, if they possibly screwed up the drilling (which I was also wondering) and a new trunk is needed, that's even worse IMO because not only did they mess up a $500 dollar spoiler but also a 45000 dollar car
Believe me, I will definitely get this rectified even more so if that's the case

You can beat that its poly, perfect fitment guaranteed, factory paint to match, and... a big plus is that it comes new trunk shocks (struts) or whatever you call it... which everyone that goes aftermarket overseas... lol...

Yeah, i would say yes... although my car is an 08, my concern was going to be whether the factory paint would match after a few years of sun exposure and what not... but it matches exactly... which is why i went with OEM...

Thanks again....based on the replies thus far, it's pretty safe to say that this is a botched install and i'm not being overly critical.
The same reasons you mentioned going with the OEM are the reasons I did. Unfortunately they must of had someone with no clue install mine from the sounds of it where yours was done correctly (as I would expect as well).
I went back to the dealer this am but the service writer says the service manager is out and he's the one who has to make the decision to replace it. I have an appt with him on Friday for review. My guess is that the service manager will make this right in one way or another (I've dealt with him in the past for another issue and he was quick to rectify it. He actually gave me his personal cell number at that time and told me to call him if there was ever an issue so I could technically call him now directly to get the ball rolling but I will give the benefit of the doubt for the moment and wait to see what happens come Friday)
No...I bought it many hundreds of miles away in a different state. None the less, the service depts although in the dealer buildings, work independent. They make the same money either way as long as you keep going to them. They still want you to be a loyal customer. So, using that as a basis, where i bought it shouldn't have any impact.
not if your cautious... sounds like they might have tried banging it in at its ends to make it fit since the drilled holes might not be properly aligned... who knows... or they might have dropped it... either way, it shouldnt have been returned to that way... i wouldve delt with them there and then... well, thats cause the service manager and I both looked at it and let me check to see if it color matched... he and i saw it was flawless...
