I can't work out why they vandalized the cars and stole the plates - I always figured plate thieves needed them for temporary cover on stolen cars, or something like that, and that doesn't work if you just made it painfully obvious to the victim he'd been hit. If it was petty vandalism, it makes more sense to hit your targets and git, taking the time to remove plates puts you at risk of getting caught.
Or am I overthinking this?
