Newbie Ques. from old fart

What impact will a non-OEM exhuast have on the on-board computer?

My kid suggest I get a Magnaflow or Boria exhaust.

Will the computer have to be reset/reprogrammed?
Does the computer expect a certain range of parameteres from the exhaust?

I ask becuase back in the 80's **cough**, I helped a friend cut off his catalytic converter on his '78 Camaro. It was a cheap way to get performace from those dogs. Well, the car ran like crap. I was told the on-board computer could'nt handle the new parameters.

I know on-board computers back then were crude by todays standards, but that event has always kept me from wanting to mess with my car. Thx.

It won't have much effect if you just do the exhaust keeping te oem cats...just will sound different based on what brand you go with.

Now, if you do HFCs or tp, I think the ecu just needs to be reset.....but don't quote me

You shouldn't have to do anything with a new exhaust. If you want you can always get an ECU tune, but it's pricey. It'll run just fine without it though.

X2 no need for anything when installing an exhaust. However i wont get magnaflow or borla. Those are for trucks and muscle cars. Check out the modding or exhaust sections. theres way better choices like tanabe, ark, mxp and so on.

I would stay away from Magnaflow and Boria. There are a ton of vids you can find on youtube where you can listen to different exhaust systems. Thats what I did before buying one for the Z. It ended up being a bit louder than I anticapted but in the end I love the sound. I definately listened to them as I personally hate a raspy sounding exhaust. The stock Z one was very raspy to me.

This. I would install a Borla system on my car before I'd install one of the other popular Korean-made exhausts of this forum...

I dont deny they sound good. But borla and magnaflow are HUGE mass producers. They utilize all the same muffler and spec designs for similar vehicles. Cuts down on costs and manufacturing times. Manufacturers like ARK and Tanabe take their time in R&D for a true one off system. To me comparing borla to tanabe is like comparing ford to bmw.

sounds like you read their brochure lol idk what the cost are on those you listed but i know stillen and borla around 1000-1300 ish and when you pay more than 1500 for an exhaust 1. on these cars its not worth it, you can try and make a case for it but its still not 2. you wont be able to tell a performance difference between them. and i could go on, some like the idea of the what the tips look but i guess they dont know they can buy different tips...

A "true one-off system"? ARK? No. Just google HKS Hi-Power. ARK loves to taut their exhaust as their "Signature Design" but it doesn't take much research to realize the design they have replicated. This topic has been exhausted on this forum. Secondly, I beg to differ on the R&D comment. Just search this forum. They won't even take the time to dyno their own system for the G37. A member on here even volunteered to pay for it.

On top of that, I would urge you to search for some of the images of the exhaust systems that have made their way into the hands of some of ARK's customers. There are some that are not pretty, to say the least. Completely unacceptable. Yes, there are many on here who are very happy with ARK and will defend them. That is fine. I am not here to bash ARK, but I 100% stand by my statement that I would install Borla and/or MagnaFlow parts before I would install anything ARK on my car. No hurt feelings. That's just my stance.

Its a good stance. Although ARK may not be a the best example of a one off, if you are to looking to compare it to how borla or magnaflow makes their systems it's a lot worse. They mostly out source their stuff to china. Plus I used to have a truck and I ran magnaflow. Probably one of the reasons why I wont run it on my G. Great company they wouldnt be that big if they weren't but something about buying an exhaust from a manufacturer that makes everything from a bmw to a 69 mustang to a f150 exhaust bothers me hahah

... I don't disagree with those sentiments. I have had quite a few Borla products on American-made trucks and I did actually have one on my Z before I swapped that exhaust four additional times.

I don't see myself putting a Borla or MagnaFlow on my G any time soon, but that doesn't mean, if I had to choose between one of those and ARK, I wouldn't.
