Need Some Opinions - Thinking of Switching to a G-Coupe

Well I've been quietly viewing, reading, and taking in as much information as I can the past few months on here. I've been thinking of getting rid of my current daily for a new one; switch it up a bit. Currently my DD is an '08 Acura TL Type-S, and I've been considering switching over to a G37S Coupe. Any opinions on this? Has anybody else come from a very similar car? I miss having a coupe, even though the 4-door is nice.

I travel a lot for work, and the G seems to have all the things I need (mostly Bluetooth, and Nav) while still being a blast to drive.

Now, from what I've gathered so far, I think I want an '09+. Since I do a ton of highway driving, the 7spd Auto seems like the better bet for me. Plus, if I want to have fun, I'll throw it over into the driver-sport mode (My TL-S has paddle shifters as well).

I've also been reading that the nav screen is a thousand times better in the 2010 models, rather than the 2008/2009 models, but some people think that Infiniti changed some things up for the worst overall in the 2010 models. Am I correct there, or is that more of a personal preference?

As for it being RWD...no problems there. My first car was a '96 Mustang GT that I daily drove in the snow all the time. I understand the physics and how to act in snow. Hell, I actually think FWD is harder, IMO, to control in the snow then RWD.

Anything else I need to look out for? Or other opinions for that matter?

This car won't be a play car for me. I have my Cobra that sits in the garage unless it's nice out, and my bike as well. The TL-S is a very nice car, but I wouldn't mind something with a bit more *****...as well as that sexy 3.7L sound

Thanks fellas, I appreciate the input!

From: Framingham Ma,
Hey man if you live in a snow area you can get the X Coupe (They come in sport now), The SPD auto is ok, some have flare, an some, dont the biggest issue with the 7 spd is gear hunting( 35 MPH and in 5th)? The car is awsome , My buddu has a TL Type S and likes my car a lot and was also think about switch till he has a baby,:/. The G will definitly have more *****, I have the X coupe and have 300 WHP .. The leaether is nice and the interior is oh so nice, I do not think you will be disappointed,

The 2010s have a slightly different gauge cluster, the black/white information display, white needles, the font is less italic and a slightly smaller blue "eclipse" around the dials; the previous years are orange on orange. The new 2010 Nav screen definitely has a sharper image but I'm not sure if they changed the features. The 2011 sport models received a new front and different wheels, I think that's where most of the opinions differ. You also get Music Box... if you still use CD's.

The car is a blast to drive. I came from a sedan and actually miss having the 4 doors, but love the look of a 2 door coupe. I also came from a 96 Mustang and it's like the good ol' times with RWD and snow, modding, sound, speed, everything! This car is much better suited for me than the sedan was.

For highway driving, if you can drive manual, I would recommend it. Then you can't complain about poor shifting with the AT I've driven a 2011 X sedan, and though it's nice, there's nothing like rowing through the gears. Plus once you hit cruising speed in a manual, you'll be sitting in 6th the whole way there anyway .

The red LCD data screen on the dash looks a bit outdated IMO compared to the nice white ones in the 10+ but it's not a deal breaker. The resolution on the Nav screen is also sharper, but again, not a deal breaker. We're not talking about 8-bit in the 08 nav screen. There are only small subtle differences between the years. As mentioned, a different front bumper, fog lights, back up sensors. The interior is the same for the most part. I think you'll be happy with whatever year you choose.

How's the rattles? I know there were a few in my TL that drove me crazy. I had to have a few trips to the dealer, and a few warranty claims to get them all fixed.

Rant: Your Acura was made in OHIO! The G37 is made in JAPAN like the REAL Acuras were.

I traded my 2001 Acura CL-S with 145,000 miles on May 31, 2011 for a 2011 G37 Journey Coupe. It just turned over to 10,000 miles today.

Here is my take on the G37. I used to cut senior year high school in 1969 to take the HD Cafe Racer bike on rides in the mountains above Los Angeles, CA2 for those that are locals. The G has been up there (8) times since I got it. You will not be sorry. Word of advise, do not run the Cobra against a G37S, it will not be pretty. And yes, I'm old!

In my opinion, switching from a TL-S to a G37S will be a big upgrade, man. You will love it. The powerful engine, the fantastic rear-wheel drive will really be a thing to admire every time you drive. The 37 is an excellent commuter, too. Easy in traffic, easy when you want to speed. It looks, sounds and performs better than any TL, in my opinion. The interior quality matches BMW, and that's not something I could say for Acura. I agree about the '10+ model being a bit worse--primarily, it's because of the interior changes that they made. The center console/shifter area was revised and I hate it. I have an '08 and love the interior of the classic G35 resemblance. And having an 7-speed is awesome, too. You'll save lots of gas versus a 5-speed.

I highly recommend test driving one. That will be worth more than any of us can input for you here. Personally, I think the G is much better than the TL--as long as you get the Sport package, that is. Drive one! If you don't fall in love, you will know not to get it. I'm sure you will, though.

In terms of rattles, every car in this class has them. This one will maybe have a bit, too, but it depends on the roads upon which you drive. If you hit every pothole there is, it'll develop rattles with time. I've driven a handful of 335i's and they had rattles as well, so a G will as well. Not always, but most likely. Some people have had issues, some haven't. Most of them are easy fixes.

When I got rid of my 15 yr old z28 with some 80K+ miles on it, the car had very slight rattles - due to suspension wear, not something loose inside. As you may know, Chicago/IL roads are not the best. I typically treated broken roads as a road course and would be all over my lane swerving around them.

What?! Even with all those tolls you guys have to pay?! lol.

My G has 44,000 miles on it and the only rattle I hear is from the subwoofer

Seriously though, it is pretty darn quite inside rattle-wise. MUCH better than the 09 Mitsubishi Lancer that I used to drive.

And like another poster said, test drive it. I drove the 6mt and it was love at first launch

When I was looking at buying a car last year I test drove the 335i, tl-s and a 2009 G37's. 335i the dealers were douche bags and treated me like a kid (24) who couldn't afford the car. tl-s I loved the interior black seats with white stitching and nav but did not want a FWD car. The G37 took it on the test drive and overall experience. I have had mine for a year and 6 months so far and do not have a single regret. There is not a single rattle in mine (unless I have something in the door cupholder or sunglass holder). But the RWD, Coupe, interior and 330hp sold me and I bought it that day.

Thats funny as my G sits in the garage unless its nice out! The G is a very good car and you won't be sorry with buying one. Just make sure you take lots of test drives with various models and find a sales person that knows what they are talking about when describing the features of it.

I am older but when I went into the dealership I looked like crap as we were out Jeeping just moments before going in. All the sales people avoided us but one. When he ran my credit he was floored......................I big ole smile was one his face after that. I may have looked like crap but it doesn't mean I can't afford a car.
