What to look for in a used G37S
What to look for in a used G37S
Alright folks, I'm looking at a used G37S in Houston (over 2.5 hours away from where I live in Austin) that has about 20,000 miles on it. The car looks gorgeous from the photos and it has all the options that I want (premium package). I'm totally stoked, but at the same time a bit worried because it is listed below KBB value (by a fairly significant margin) AND it has been on their lot for about 2 months.
The car is a single owner with no accidents - I called Infiniti and they said that it had not been serviced by them since it had 6,000 miles or so. It had to have the memory seats fixed, some trim had pulled away on the rear left wheel well (at least thats what it sounded like), and the iPod connection had to be fixed.
Besides the obvious (accidents, paint, oil leaks), is there anything that I should be looking for in this car? The warranty still has about 3 months left on it before it runs out. Is there anything that I should have done before the warranty runs out (I'm assuming they wont do the 30k mile maintenance)?
Thanks!

I'm assuming it's an 08? 6MT or 5AT? How much are they asking for it and does it have Sport, Navi, Tech packages? Share some details
Paint, rust, accidents, etc... are the obvious to look for. There isn't much that can go wrong with a G. Or atleast I have never had any problems with mine. *knocks on wood*

It's a 2008 6MT with the premium package (moonroof, ipod, etc). It doesn't have the sports package, but I think I'll live
Here's the listing:

that is a sport. looks good. $26k for 20,xxx miles is good. hard to tell from pictures but if carfax and autocheck come back clean. I would have to assume there isnt something wrong with it. I would drive it before finalizing any deals though.
check paint, wheels, tires, look for signs of a leak from the sunroof or doors.

Uhoh.
I just got a call from the dealer and he said that there was "a noise from the transmission" so they brought it to the Infiniti dealership to take a look at.
Do the G37's have a lot of transmission issues? I looked at another one that had to have it's tranny replaced at 30k miles - that seemed like a sign that the car had been beat.

save yourself the headache and keep looking or buy a new one
The problem with sport coupes is that it's very hard to find decent used ones. A vast majority of people who have them simply can't resist the urge to thrash them, it's not just G37's but any sport coupes, particularly BMW's
wouldn't touch it with a barge pole man.

I don't know your situation obviously but, if you are in a position to do so and actually have $26k in money green, why not put down and finance the rest. That's assuming that one is in that position, not factoring in many other variables. Good Luck either way !!!!
I agree with others. You really get what you pay for. If you really want buy it, spend $100 or so to have it checked out at a shop (or an Infniti dealership).
I am from Houston by the way. May I ask what dealership are you buying from?

My first comment was going to be to check the transmission. It's always a gamble to buy a used manual transmission to begin with - and then couple that with the fact that there have been some transmissions go early in these cars. And, now that there are legit transmission issues with this car, you should walk away.

KBB is for people who have no clue how car values work, and for people who go to the dealer to add air to the tires.
NADA is the true value of a car. that car- odds are, came from the auction- where prices are much-much less then what KBB will value it for.
check the car-fax(which 90% of the is BS anyway), but see where it was registered before. if it was out of state- there you go = auction car.
check around the speedo/dash area to see if any pry marks exist. if so- the mileage was rewound.
UPDATE: just checked the carfax on it, and it seems 1owner, and pretty accurate details on the service. doesnt seem that the cars mileage was rewound. looks clean, history wise. looks like a trade in?
