AWD Opinions

Might be buying the 2011 g coupe with their intelligent awd system. Looking for any opinions of people out there who have the awd and how effectively it works? Or in other words how will the traction is and the actual monitoring and switching between awd and just rwd.

Also was just wondering if any of you guys out there drive the G RWD in Snow with just snow tires? and if you guys lose traction often?

Thankssss

I love it, i think attesa is one of the best AWD systems out there. Given the only other ive driven is a lexus and a dodge, Lexus is absolutely terrible and dodge is so so in comparison

You really cant go wrong with Infiniti's AWD drive system. I hear many good things about it.

I have no regret getting the AWD. My G is in RWD mode most of the time until it detects slip which then the AWD mode kicks in. And if you want to be extra safe, put on snow tires as well, you really can't go wrong with it.

By the way, I think only the AWD version has the Snow Mode.

No regrets, AWD works very well. Remember that same AWD is on GT-R, car that outperforming RWD Corvette's, Porches and some Ferraris as well.
Thing I don't like is cheapo implementation by Nissan, 18 inch rims/narrow crappy stock dunlop's etc.

Actually the AWD in the GT-R is in no way shape or form related to the AWD in the entire Infiniti line. But it is a good system in the G non the less. It allows some slip before kicking in and it doesn't over power when trying to right the car on its intended path.

They don't share bolts and gaskets, they share idea which works great on both cars.

I heard lots of good things about AWD system. But it's harder to mod compare to RWD. so I would get AWD only if I live in cold climate with snows.

I bought the AWD living in New York, we dont get a ton of snow but there are a few days of snow that could hinder the RWD vehicles useless. I love everything about it other than it being auto, how ever i heard last night that AWD may see manual in 2012. So if your want the sportier feel wait a year and see if they do an AWD 5/6MT of some sort, if not go with it now, theres still plenty of mods available for the AWD vehicles, not quite as many but enough.

I'd highly recommend it, if you aren't sure go and drive one and see how it performs. The car is a little heavier, but not that noticeable and it's nice having the assurance of AWD. Initially I considered a RWD G, but ended up going with the X and never looked back.

The AWD is great in the winter and even keeps your car in line in the summer time when you are pushing it hard. I used to have an M35X and the traction was incredible. Slap winter tires on and the only thing I was not going around was snow plows.
In the summer time time it was pretty much impossible to get the *** to swing out, so I got an RWD. However, January to March will provide a few moments of absolute terror, even with snow tires. I would NOT take it out in heavy snow.

I will take a few days a year of white knuckle driving for the fun you get out of Spring, Summer and Fall driving.

anybody drive RWD in snow with just snow tires? can that be done or is it really dangerous?

and so it will be in RWD essentially unless it detects slip then will go into AWD? so in the summer it will drive just like the RWD?

and isn't it just the exhaust that is different between the AWD and RWD? or is there more

Snow tires and RWD is fine with the G. If you absolutely positively have to have AWD to get to work and around town (tons of snow on un-plowed roads, roads not salted, steep grades with minimal traction), chances are, you don't need a G37x, you need something much more capable anyway IMO. How have we been getting around all these years in the crappy winter without AWD? There's nothing that snow tires and a little throttle modulation can't take care of from the inclement weather I've driven in, even up north where it sux during the winter.

and so it will be in RWD essentially unless it detects slip then will go into AWD? so in the summer it will drive just like the RWD?
That is my understanding that it is indeed RWD until slip is detected.

There is a difference and some aftermarket exhausts do not fit. Most AWD guys aren't heavy modders, so this probably won't be a show stopper for you if you don't plan on putting exhaust on the car.

I have the new 2011 AWD g37xs and I find the AWD amazing. I have had audi, subaru, even mercedies, but I prefer the infiniti line the most. The way it always has power to the rear wheels unless it starts to slip is an amazing implementation. I use to think the audi was great for there AWD, well I think Infiniti has topped them now. I love my coupe and as soon as I pass that 1500 mile mark and give it my oil change, I will see what it can really do!
