Driving from Chicago to Phoenix in X coupe

Hey people! This is my first post (I think... Been signed up for awhile). Awesome forum here, with tons of useful information, however I'm looking for some advice/suggestions.

I bought a new '09 G37x coupe in October (I love this thing). I've been in the Chicagoland area the last 7 years, hence my decision to go for the AWD.

I'm now moving back to my hometown of Phoenix, AZ and have been considering swapping up to a 2010 G37S, obviously because there seems to be so much more as far as mods and really, who needs AWD in the desert?

Then my thoughts on an S came to a temporary halt shortly after a call from the fiancée revealed we've got a baby on the way. The move to AZ has been pushed up to a few weeks from now...

I'm wondering if anybody has taken a G coupe on a looooong drive, like 30 hours worth of road tripping? It's about 1800 miles.... Anything I should keep in mind besides your basic road trip rules?

I made the same trip in 2007 with a 2006 G35S sedan. Except I did it in April with summer tires and snow was headed to the TX panhandle. So I drove for 12 hrs straight just so I would miss it. The best part of the trip IMHO is when you first enter New Mexico and the trip from Flagstaff to the Valley, I love the scenery and the downhill curvyness. I wouldn't worry about anything, just try not to fall asleep from Chicago to New Mexico. Oh and stop by my house with some Portillos

FYI - There is now a Al's Beef in Scottsdale, tastes like home.

1. It's rough to be in a coupe for that long, noisy and 18" wheels.

2. if you want a 2010 S (may be a sedan), you might be able to get better deal for your X in Chicago plus it's a bigger market.

I've taken several long trips in the G. There's nothing special you need to do out of the ordinary, you should be fine. Have a good safe trip, and congrats on knocking up the little lady. At least I hope it was you.

Buy a prepaid phone (different carrier, if you have CDMA, buy GSM phone and vs.) so in case anything happen, you can call Roadside assistant. I hit a deer when I was driving from GA to CA. Luckily I only had to walk 2 miles to get help.

I went on a 1500 mile road trip in my 2008 G37S and it was perfectly fine. If it's only you and one other person, it won't be bad at all. And if I were you, I wouldn't trade an 09X for a 10s, there is just not enough added benefit to warrant losing money on the current car. Plus, if you ever decide to go up north and get away for the weekend, you will utilize that AWD. Just my .02

I agree, just hang on to what you have. With a baby on the way, you'll have enough additional expenses to worry about without having to take a big hit on a trade of an almost new car. The X can also come in handy in wet weather, too. If you want mods for it, you can find some and still save a lot of money by not trading in for an S. Find some cool wheels, maybe an exhaust and keep what you have. It's still a G!
