My lease is up in Oct, I really enjoy the g37, maybe even upgrade to convertible. However, im expecting a child, and gf made it clear that if I want to be "dumb" and not get an SUV, then I shouldnt count on using her car when taking our child somewhere.

Has anybody had experience using a car seat in a g37? Is it a real pita?

 

I think it would be a pain in the butt taking a child in and out of the back seat car seat.I hated taking my son out of the back seat car seat in my 1990 Thunderbird super coupe and its bigger then the G37.Thats just me though.

 

Child seats in any any coupe are a PIA. Anyone that tells you otherwise has convinced themselves that it doesn't suck in the name of vanity, but be assured that it does.

I had a sedan when my son was a baby. If I had been trying to negotiate the interior of a coupe while getting him in and out of a car multiple times a day, I would have probably lost my mind in the process.

Trust me on this. You are going to have plenty of new stress with a baby, and you're going to be pressed for time in many instances. The last thing you're going to want to deal with is having to perform Cirque du Soleil every morning and evening to go anywhere, and that car is going to absolutely scream "weekend dad". Go all in on this thing, accept that your life is going to change (mostly for the better!), and buy a sedan so your girlfriend doesn't think you're a total moron.

Just leave the seat in and grab the kid?

If you're only going to have your child in your car a few times a week, then keep the G, no need to get rid of it if it's one or two times a week. If it's going to be half the time in your car and half the time in your wife's car, then I would consider a four door. With one child though, I would consider keeping the coupe.

 

I have done both...I drove with my kids in car seats (for a couple years) and now that my wife's schedule has changed, she now takes the kids in the SUV while I only do it once in a great while.

Personally, I would go for a coupe again no matter how often I have the kids. To me, it's not that difficult to get them in and out (car seats and all). I just hate how slow the seats move forward. A seat that moves that slow for me is an eternity for a 3 year old!! lol

The new dilemma that I have to deal with is my week old newborn has now put the family up to 5 total (if you include me and my wife)...not easy in a 4 seater car...... So far, it'll work for me since the wife has the kids, but there is no telling if I will need more seats at my next assignment (depends on what job my wife can find).

 

I have 2 kids and one of them is 16 months old. It is a PITA with a rear facing seat for the little ones but it is doable. It helps if you get a child seat with a detachable base. Once the kids get older and the seats are no longer facing the rear, it gets even easier.

I have to admit, though my wife does nearly all of the transporting to daycare in a Honda CRV so I don't deal with it much. I actually traded my G35 Sedan for a G37 Coupe.

A big consideration is what kind of car the GF has now and what she might be getting later. My wife had a Toyota Corolla before it got totaled at a red light and she got a CRV. A few months later I got the G37. As long as both of you can haul the kids, only one needs a true family hauler.

 

When we had our first child, I sold my two door and got a four door. Then, over two years, I found that my daughter only rode in my car a few times, and never out of necessity, but only because she wanted to "ride daddy's car." So I went back to a two door. Now we are pregnant with No. 2, so I got rid of the two door and got a four door G37. I have a feeling that we'll never use my car with the kids (wife has an SUV), and that I'll go back to a two door soon.

Moral of the story: Keep the two door if you enjoy them more than four door cars, but only if a) you won't have to take the kid(s) around a lot and b) your sig other is cool with it.

 

I've regularly had a child seat in the car and yes, it's a pain in the *** unless you keep the seat in the car at all times.

 

I got my G when my son was about 3 years old and it wasn't too much of a pain to get him in and out (and that's everyday). But with a newborn, it would be a little different, as they typically get carried around in their car seats. It will be an inconvenience, but I love my car too much, so I deal with it.

 

^ They'll only be in that seat for a couple years. Then it's easy.

 

I have a 7 week old and have put her seat in the G a few times. It's not that bad. The seats with the detachable base make all the difference in the world (we got 2 bases...1 to leave in the G and 1 to leave in the diesel). If you had to hook the seat in every time it would be a huge PITA. With the detachable base it's really not that big of a deal.....Slide the seat all the way forward and just snap the base in or unsnap it out...

Now the reality is that the rear facing seat takes up a good bit of space and you better have a pretty small person that needs to sit in the front passenger seat (I'm 6' and there'd be no way in hell I could fit in there). With just the base in it's no big deal...

We're the same way as several others on here though....Most of the time if we're going somewhere (or going in different directions and one of us is taking our daughter) the person/persons with the baby takes the crew cab diesel.....100% easier that way....

 

Sirhc7897 is spot on. the child seats with detachable base are key. If you have to run seatbelts everytime, then yeah its touch. But with the detachable. I just pop the seat in about 2 seconds and its done. One quick release and she's out.

 

Or time for a 2nd car.

I kept my coupe & leased my wife a suv.

yes coupe is in no way practical, More than once I had to use the SUV.

Plus with all the skid marks from sneakers/dirt etc., it gets rough back there.

The truck gets it really bad in the rain.

 

I got a separate base (one for the coupe and one for the sedan) so if there is a need for me to take the little guy, I can just snap it in. Also, we have multi stage car seats (little guy is only a few months old), one for my car and one for the wife. It really isn't as bad as people make it out to be - once you have the seat (or base) you are more than half way there. Most people have said to me "have to get rid of the coupe now huh". no chance, I like it way too much!
