I guess I am lucky b/c Florida does not require a front plate. But I was curious. You have to have a front plate when you're driving. You have to have a front plate while parked.

So when exactly do you guys retract the front plate?

In Cali, I think you'll be okay if you drive with it off, it's illegal, but everyone drives with it off. However it's a bitch when your parked and a cop gives you a front plate ticket so I'm guessing thats when he retracts it.

Or for car shows!

It would be difficult to do a DIY now that mine and Wezbian's are both installed. However, next time I have my bumper off, I can take some detailed pics. Also, next time Wezbian has some free time, I can take things apart and take pictures of all the wiring.. it's extremely easy!!

As for the question about when I retract it... I drive with it retracted all the time. The reason I have this installed is for the novelty at shows and also to be able to put up in the event I get pulled over for it. Cops around here love cool stuff like this, so they would likely get a kick out of it anyway.

That looks pretty cool.

In the real world, the cops will just write you up for something else since he's already got you pulled over.

I can't imagine that is legal, heh.

Of course, I still think the one Mythbusters did was cooler

All that being said though... good job!

FYI, those redlight/toll road/speed cameras take multiple pictures to get the front plate, rear plate, and drivers face. This wouldn't really work for evading those.

It is most certainly legal to have. In fact, I received a 'no front plate' ticket a while back which is what prompted me to purchase this in the first place. After installation, I found a 5-0, and asked him to sign it off. He was fawning over it and asked where he could buy one for his mustang.
