About to get the G37, but do I really have to break it in?

I have an 07 G35 right now and the lease is up, getting the 09 g37 within the next few days. I was wondering if breaking in is really necessary and how exactly do i break her in. If I don't what will be the consequence and also what should I not do which can mess up the car before its broken in. Thanks

You might want to search to prevent the pain you are about the get, along with two diverse sets of answers.

Oh forgot to answer. I vote follow the manual. Page 5-41 in the manual. Basically under 4K for 1200 miles, no hard braking, etc.

there are so many theories on this, i just follow the manual cause i thought the engineers that designed the car knew what they were doing

some people will tell you otherwise, but search is your friend

don't go over 4 k rpms, and don't stay at constant speeds for a long time.

The most likely issue from not breaking it in as the manual recommends is reduced engine longevity on the back end. Many here will disagree with that. You are probably talking about things that won't be an issue until you are at high mileage, if even then. Judging by the fact that you are leasing and trading a car only 2 years old for this one, you may not care. Let it be the next guys problem is the attitude of some.

My opinion, keep your undies on and break it in per the Owner's Manual directions.

+1 on following the manual. You can download the factory owner's manual here:

While you're here with us on myG37.com, definitely try using the "search" function above which will give you a good starting point to find answers to commonly asked questions (there have been at least 15 different "break-in" threads I can think of since I joined this forum in December.) Enjoy your G when you get her.

To clarify, it is page 5-41 of the Owners Manual. But you will want to download a copy of the FSM as well for future reference.

You do NOT have to break this car in... I was told by multiple dealers... including Harper's the one i got mine from that it is not necessry...

this is a very argued topic though... but I know for a fact that your engine is redlined like crazy for those 11 test miles.... so why baby when its already been redlined and pushed?

Remember you are breaking in a lot of moving parts and not just a motor. People seem to forget that from time to time. You are also breaking in your brain and how you and the G work together, so I would follow the book and you will be doing the G and yourself a big favour. I hope it's everything you expect and more. It's a great car.

well put CHI-TOWN...the motor absolutely has been red lined and pushed to the max, so the motor, yes, is ready to go as fast and as hard as you want to go. the big thing with breaking in a car is getting the seals to seat properly. if you push it too hard too soon the seals throughout many of the different parts of the car will not seat right and then later on down the road that CAN lead to problems. there are plenty of people who have gone all out from day 1 and never had problems, there are plenty who have had problems. in the end, its YOUR car and as long as you are happy thats what matters

I have followed the manual on both my G35 and G37 and had no issues. The previous G35 was known for oil consumption. I had no issues. Part of me wonders if it had something to do with the way that is was broken in- cant say for sure.

In my previous car before the G35, I broke it in hard. I kept it for 10 years and when I sold it it still ran perfect. However I spent a lot of money on the engine (seals, gaskets etc) to keep it running perfect- could be just coincidence but I say follow the manual. This is a $45K car- why not be cautions... and it's only 1200 miles, most people drive 1200 miles in a month or less. Just be patient.

Meh. Just baby the clutch to break it in properly for the first 500 miles. The motor should be straight.
