Manual vs Auto
Manual vs Auto
How much faster is a manual than an Auto? If you took two G37's keep them stock and race them, how much faster would the manual be then the Auto from 0-60, quarter mile, etc...?
The point is that I know manual is def funner to drive and you feel like you have full control of the car but I just wanted to know how big of a difference would it make when it actually came down to measuring the seconds. Does anybody know this?

/TSB on this perhaps.

In the real world, I would bet that 7 out of 10 manual drivers are not skilled enough to beat the guy in DS auto mode. That's just my opinion.
It really comes down to the driver. Assuming the manual was driven by an experienced driver, I'd say your 0-60 difference could be somewhere in the range of 0.1 to 0.3 seconds faster. I can't vouch for the 7AT due out soon, but I'd bet that it'd close the gap a little bit more.
I bet they ar very close and, in fact, unless the manual driver is very good, the auto would be faster. Having said that, a manual with a skilled driver that shifts very quickly and at the right time would like be a few tenths quicker to 60.

I'm sure they would!!
1. Many manual drivers who are really skilled enough to get every last 1/10th of a second out of there cars and would beat the auto.
2. Lots of manual drivers would are NOT skilled enough and know it.
3. Those who are not skilled enough but think they are!!

I would bet the majority of people are in category 3!! I know I am #3!
Well, if I know I am a #3, then that really makes me a #2.

Auto's pretty much cancel out driver mistakes and poor driving of a manual so i assume that a automatic would be slightly faster, more often than not.
with that said, i love my 6mt.

the Key to Beating an Auto is 1st --> 2nd -->3rd. get those right you got it
Manual is faster. Auto has a lot of lag. DS mode? hahah (enough said). Anyways, who cares what's faster, speaking of total driving experience and feel, nothing beats manual. Manual cars are just more fun to drive. The getting stuck in traffic excuse is lame because no one drives more than the big rig truck drivers, and they have what? a 9 speed manual transmission....

Assuming the Auto is in "DS" mode -
Rolling at 15MPH or higher, the Auto is without a doubt, the champ.
The 6MT with an extremely skilled driver will match the Auto off the hole.
Keep in mind if you've ever driven the Auto in DS mode, the shifts are nearly perfect; where they need to be.
If you are comparing "Fun Factor" vs. I want to race, etc. There's many other things you need to keep in mind. For example, Unless you are racing a stock Automatic G37 vs. a stock 6MT G37, these numbers are irrelevant. The BMW 335i will still be slighly quicker, and the average EVO will still be slower. If your looking to go FI, and mod it, I would suggest, get the 6MT - i mean, who really buys an Auto car to mod it to 600HP and then have to start an auto-6mt swap due to issues along the way.
If you want a comfortable ride, yet quick, sleek as hell and fun to play with (If you master paddle), then get an Auto.
Its a give or take, they both have positives or negatives. For example, go on I95 bumper to bumper traffic and you'll see my gripes and grins about a Manual. Go to a night meet with friends and 20+ cars to hang out, and you'll see my point on "Fun Factor" with the 6MT. Against each other to be honest, if your have under 5 years of experience driving a manual, YES, the Auto is quicker, and only minimal unnoticeable numbers.
Kidcane - Manuel is the fastest Mexican I know and I will still beat him with my AT.
