i heard the break in period was about 1200 miles. is this true? and if so, what should i not do for the next 1167 miles?

 

Yes, it's 1200 miles. Here's what the owner's manual says:

During the first 1,200 miles (2,000 km), follow these recommendations to obtain maximum engine performance and ensure the future reliability
and economy of your new vehicle.

Failure to follow these recommendations may result in shortened engine life and reduced engine performance.

- Avoid driving for long periods at constant speed, either fast or slow. Do not run the engine over 4,000 rpm.

- Do not accelerate at full throttle in any gear.

- Avoid quick starts.

- Avoid hard braking as much as possible.

if I recall, don't exceed 4000rpms, don't truck along at constant speed - basically no fun for awhile - but apparently there is a train of thought that it's all some conspiracy by ??? and you should train your engine by driving the way you always drive, a few suggest being pretty aggressive is the way to go...I'm no mechanic so your guess is probably better than mine - BUT maybe some real car guys on here know better...ANYBODY???

IMO, follow the breakin the best you can. I don't agree with the super strict rules about 4k rpm... Basically don't rape your car the first 1200 miles. Let it get adjusted first.

 

then it's finally OK to drive the car as a high rev car was designed to be driven - at higher revs...it's definitely great fun!

dont go past 2k on the tach... change your oil every 10 miles

 

I ripped it right at 600 miles.. and now I'm being good again.. i just can't help it sometimes..

i didnt need to break in nothing. had to drive home 800 miles from ohio to louisiana. break in rules are bs anyways.

 

depends on the engine and the car. You can choose to do hard or soft but if you are an average driver then break in period really doesn't matter in the end. I believe Nissan says GT-R is fully broken in out of the factory by their driver doing only 20 km or something like that.
