All-Star: 2008 Infiniti G35/G37

By Preston Lerner

The Infiniti G is yin to the BMW 3-series' yang, and picking a winner between them - which is to say, choosing the best sport coupe/sedan in the world - is less about what the cars can do than it is about what their drivers want. For those partial to instant gratification, the Infiniti reigns supreme. The steering is sharper, the shift throws shorter, the suspension tauter, the engine peakier. The BMW is slightly more capable at the limit, but the G37 coupe and the G35 sedan feel a lot sportier getting there. Oh, and Teutonic cachet aside, these Japanese delicacies are the best bargains this side of all-you-can-eat sushi at Nobu.
The interior of the Infiniti is a pleasure dome featuring stylish aluminum trim, violet mood lighting, and French-stitched leather seats. But the car's willingness to get with the program is obvious the instant you punch the push-button starter and hear the feral growl pulsing out the bad-boy tailpipes. Nissan's VQ V-6 engine makes an impressive 306 hp in 3.5-liter sedan form and 330 ponies when stroked to 3.7 liters in the coupe.
Both cars ride on a new, stiffer version of the FM platform that underpinned the original G35 five years ago. Toss in the Sport package, with bolder wheels and tires, brawnier brakes, and an eager six-speed manual transmission, and you get a sexy beast that slices apexes like a sashimi knife and powers out of them like a typhoon.
Although the G37 is more powerful than the G35, it's heavier, too, so the difference in performance is negligible. Also, the revised sheetmetal has rejuvenated the once-dowdy sedan, which is now nearly as shapely as the coupe. So the toughest choice may no longer be between the Infiniti and the BMW. It's between the G37 and the G35.

I don't think I have seen one review where the G37 doesn't get voted better than the 335.

Mag comments include performance, value, etc.

Car and Driver
335i > G37

Motor Trend
G37 > 335i

Automobile
G37 = 335i

Road and Track
335i > G37

Edmunds
335i > G37

The mags have the 335i edged out by a tad...one consensus is that the 335i is the better performer from a dig and more refined but best value and great sticky handling and uber gadgets go to the G37

i think they really are great competitors..much closer than bimmer fans want to admit...lol.

Meh. More metaphors than review substance. Money no object = BMW. Performance bargain of the year= G37.

There's also a sexy factor that nobody ever talks about.

G37>>>>>>> 335i

The G is sex on wheels! Girls love the Gs.

i find the girls like my G...but it seems the girls want to suck c*** when they see a bimmer (of course it could be a 328i it doesn't matter to them)

i love how the 335i looks but obviously i like the G37's appearance better.

BWM 335 is nice, but my budget was more 42ish rather than 48ish

Mad respect though, they are nice cars.

Yes agree with the author, only because like most ppl that bought the G37, I test drove both multiple times and did plenty of research. Coming off 2 G coupes in the past, I was already a bit biased, but it all comes down to what you want.

MSRP of my car was $40535, but with VPP and owner loyalty cash I got about $3800 off. A similarly equipped 335 would have cost me about $10k more. Bottom line is that i just liked driving the G37 more, and has more features for daily driver.

I still break my neck when i see a 335 coupe since there are so few in my area, but today is first time i saw another G37 on the road since i bought mine and I couldn't stop staring at it. It just has exotic, "ooo whats that car?" look to it.

Well to be honest its just that BMW has always been favored over almost all competitors....take the IS350....The e90 330i was rated superior over it....when in reality the IS350 is more on par with the 335i sedan....Also during that test, the BMW was equiped with sports pack and the lexus was not.
BMW will always have the upper hand as it just seems like Magazines such as C&D favor it over 99% of all manufacturers.
