So whose gotten their first oil change in their new G37...

ME ME ME! I did, i did! yay

Was planning to do the first at 1000 miles, and was at 900 now... so figured it was friday, wanna enjoy my weekend... so why not today!

Lady looked at me like i was crazy and said you're supposed to wait till 3750 miles (apparenlty she just bought a G37 herself, in IP!)
Service Dept Manager over heard, and tells me that is good I'm gettin it done at 1000, then i should do it again at 3k and every 3k after that.

Also, i was told not to switch to Synthetic till 20K miles by a service TECH that rebuilds and works on engines for a Nissan sponsor.

Did he tell you why not? I was going to put synthetic in at my 1000 mile change.

Oh, yes.. the reason... this is actually very important:

He says not to change till 20K to give the VQ motor time to "wear" in properly... this will greatly impact oil consumption issues. It's not like this for all engines, but seems to be something associated with VQ motors after rev-up was introduced.

I was planning to change after 7k as i have read and heard somthing like this before in the past about letting the engine "wear" properly with conventional oil. But 20k is a FIRST... i think i'll wait till the 15k service to make the switch. heh

Main point: Oil Consumption issues. Don't go to synthetic so sooon.
Yes, i kno some cars COME with synthetic blah blah, i'd rather take the advice of someone who specifically works on our VQ motors everyday.

during the break-in period, what you want to accomplish is to have the piston rings seal properly. synthetic oil is too "slippery" for this to happen.

Doing (or really have done since I'm up to 1700 miles) a hard break-in... had my oil changed at 750 miles.

There is no reason to change your oil every 3000 miles in this day and age... Every 5K is the norm for most cars. From my volvo to the lexus before that...

Basing this on something u read in a manual?

I was thinking about this too. When i asked why the manual said something diff than wut all the service techs were telling me, I was told:
All companies that write these manuals just care about getting you past warranty. The don't want to write EVERY 3k, since every 5K (or in some cases 7.5K) sounds much better to a consumer. The consumer will think, wow now i dont have to change as often, and "feel" better

If you want to care for ur car, and keep it for the long run... be nice to the engine and do it around 3k or so. It's all about the DIRT in the oil. Wether you have TOP notch OIL, or just the bare minimum... all oil will hold up in ur engine (unless ur a race / track your car), but in the end: dirt is dirt. It will get in there regardless.

If you leased your car and dont care, then yea sure.

LOL... the recommended interval between oil changes in my BMW was 15,000 miles. Not that I'd ever wait that long....

All the oil engineers I know have told me something different for the last 15 years. First, in addition to all the "obvious" advantages of synthetic motor oil, a not so obvious advantage is that synthetic oil tends to hold particles away from the "flow edge" (think more in the middle if you were looking at a drop of oil). This is one reason why synthetic "protects" better and one reason why oil companies recommend longer drain intervals with synthetic.

Now, pretty much everyone I know who works for an oil company says today's drain intervals should conservatively be 3,000-4,500 for conventional oil, 4,000-6,000 for semi-synthetic and 7,000-10,000 for full synthetic (even with petroleum base stock).

One point I have not seen in this thread is that going from conventional to synthetic is best accomplished by going from conventional to semi-synthetic then from semi-synthetic to full synthetic.

"3,000-4,500 for conventional"

conventional -> synthetic blend -> full
now that's an interesting thought

I had my clearbra installed on friday and asked my service manager who i deal with if i should get oil changed at 1400 miles. He said infiniti doesnt recommend it and that they perfer u to keep it in till 3750 and that yes there was the day when u would dump as soon as u took delivery of a new vechicle but not in this day and age. I also have a 2004 MBZ s55 and was told same thing when i took delivery of it but then again BEnz uses mobil 1 full synthetic from the gate so that maybe y. On that car i can ride out to 10000 miles before its time to change and thats a supercharged v8. Bmw is worse they have there indicator built in and wont do a service until that indicator is at 0 which on my moms 750li went for about 16000 miles way to extreme but a guy at the dealer had the same car with 90000 miles and has only changed the engine 6 times which is again crazy so to each there own when it comes to oil

I'm always skeptical when I get advice from someone who has some skin in the game. I'm certain that many service techs would advise you to bring your car in for servicing every three months since it would be more money in their pockets, just like I'm certain that Jiffy Lube would recommend that you change your oil every 3 month/3K miles, regardless of factory recommendations.

As far as the "getting you past the warranty" comment, most cars today are CPOed by the factory which means that the car is coverd by a warranty for a minimum of 6 years / 100K miles. So in the minds of the car companies, their engines are good for a minimum of 100K miles and probably a lot longer, if you follow factory recommendations. On the other hand if you like to change the oil more frequently, then in the words of a friend who is a Porsche certified tech, "it won't hurt anything."

Yea. i thought about this too... but i am gettin FREE oil changes from this guy. He has nothing to profit from me, but iunno if he is still gettin paid for the hours somehow.

Once i go Synthetic around 15k miles, ill just do it every 5k. It's fun, lol.
