Rev Limiter
Rev Limiter
Will hitting the rev limiter do any damage to the engine? I know it's probably not a good thing, but I ended up driving home tonight only to be surrounded by about 20 motorcycles and ended up "driving it sportily" as I heard someone else say on the board... hit the rev limiter once and wasn't sure if it'll hurt the engine. By the way... at one of the red lights, I had a couple of them ask me "what the hell is that thing? It's fast".
This wasn't on Rt 70 was it? I take it you're not breaking this car in gently? I've been trying so hard to take it easy on the brakes and RPM's until 1000 miles. It's so frickin hard!!!
won't harm the engine at all. that's why it's limited!
i know how hard it is. today, a foreman at a job site i do CM work for wanted to go for a ride... turned off VDC, threw it into DS, car got sideways a bit and redlined in gears 1 & 2. he said, "holy sh|t this thing is awesome!!"

Oh.. and for those who'll argue with me about it, I'm not trying start or want to get involved in a debate about how you should break in the engine--I've had a dozen or so new cars and feel that I've gotten great results from the engine doing a hard break-in. Just my opinion
Yeah, mine has 350 miles and I have been to the rev limit a couple of times. I think it's important to mix it up. As a former engine builder I buy into the break it in hard theory, if you are going to normally drive it hard after "break in".
The first 50 miles I ran it up WOT to about 5K and down with engine braking. At first it was sluggish and had too much engine braking. After about 100 miles I changed the oil and filter with stock stuff. At 300 miles the engine kicks like a mule, and is super smooth on engine braking. Instant response to throttle. Something I have had to get used to.
Thats for the engine. The brakes are a different story. I am gradually getting on them harder and harder. The transmission I am using as if the car has 50000 miles on it. I want it to die early if it's going to go. So far the transmission is very strong and remarkably smooth.
The thing I am really having to get used to is the steering, and the IR laser is setting off my V1 whenever I get behind a chrome bumpered car.
I can learn to live with these issues.

I have always felt the break-in of the trans and brakes is more important than the engine. I think it's difficult to cook any of these new motors and certainly hitting the limiter is to be expected if you are breaking the motor in "hard". Just get things warmed up a bit before hammering it..., but hammer it none-the-less when things are ready.
