Infiniti bringing two new M-based models to Pebble Beach

It's not likely both models are going on sale in the fall. Anyhow, the way I see it, Infiniti has decided to make the M it's flagship. If that is the case, what happens to their mid size segment? New car? Maybe elevate the G and introduce a new car at the bottom with a size relative to it's competitors?

Infiniti announces two new M-based models for Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
For the past two years, Infiniti has been growing its presence in Pebble Beach. The week-long auto extravaganza in August plays host to a number of automaker events, but recently, Infiniti has been taking center stage. For 2010, Nissan's premium channel isn't letting up, bringing two M-based models to the party in Pebble, both of which are slated for production.
We don't have specifics on either model, but in addition to the image above, our sources within Infiniti tell us that the new coupe variants will be extensions of its current lineup, lending credence to recent rumors of an M coupe.
More interestingly, we've been told that both models will "extend Infiniti into an area we haven't been before" and that one of those models will be more "performance oriented." If that means we can expect some kind of powertrain similar to the Essence Concept that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show last year – a twin-turbo, direct injected V6 putting out over 450 horsepower – consider our interest incredibly piqued.
Both models are set to go on sale in October or November of this year, with the M35 Hybrid arriving sometime toward the end of 2011. - autoblog.com

I kind of figured that Infiniti was pushing the M into the flagship position. Leaving the G to move up to the middle position and introducing a new entry level model. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a 1 series competitor, hopefully a small lightweight 2 seater of some sort.
Pebble Beach is in August, I'd be really surprised and impressed if they have a M coupe there. That's only 3 months away and the report says they're already slated for production and to go on sale at the end of the year. There hasn't been a single rumour of a M coupe until a couple of weeks ago.
One of them will probably be the M35 Hybird which will be positioned as a "performance hybrid" but I don't know what the other would be.
Those are just the sketches for the G37 Sedan and Coupe aren't they? I know they say they're the "new M model sketches" but they look just like the G sketches and they don't have the characteristic "hump" in the back like the M sketch does.

Edmunds takes the shenanigans even further by saying they believe the second car could be a production version of the Essence show car.
Infiniti officials told an a group of journalists yesterday that it would use the annual Pebble Beach weekend to introduce two new models that would go on sale this fall. Judging from the sketches, one of them is likely to be an M coupe similar to the one we showed you last week.
And the other? Well, we would bet on a production version of the Essence show car. It's been championed by plenty of top executives at the company and the announcement said only one of these cars would be a "volume seller." That leaves the door open for a halo car like the Essence and its ultra-expensive hybrid drivetrain.

In another article I read Autocar states: Infiniti will add three new smaller models to its range over the next three years, including an Audi A3 rival, an entry-level SUV and an electric hatch based on the Nissan Leaf.
Meaning if those two new M based models are completely new Infiniti would be introducing 5 new models in less than two years and that does not include a possible G25. I don't see Infiniti being that ambitious.
With all that being said autoblog was told both models will "extend Infiniti into an area we haven't been before" and that one of those models will be more "performance oriented."
Meaning two new models that have not built before or two current models offering a variant we have not seen before?

That's why I'm pretty sure that one will be the M35 Hybird. It's an M model and Infiniti has never sold a hybrid, as well Infiniti has said it's a "performance hybrid" which seems to mesh with the "performance oriented" quote.
The second one may be a smaller vehicle of some sort. Maybe the Infiniti version of the Nissan LEAF?

OK finally, someone with some sense asked the VP of Infiniti about this.

Infiniti M35 Hybrid Due at L.A. Show; Essence M Coupe A No-Show? - The Car Connection
The other two products in the pipeline haven't been confirmed, but Poore hints broadly that a pair of cars smaller than the current Infiniti G37 sedans are coming to the Infiniti display at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August. And though German automakers like Mercedes and BMW have had less than stellar track records with hatchbacks, he suggests these smaller cars will be hatches--but perhaps with more sedan-like styling cues, like the crop of concepts that include vehicles like the upcoming Audi A7.
One is likely to be the Infiniti electric vehicle based on the Project Better Place electric vehicle, which also has been shown as the Renault Fluence. Another could be an Infiniti version of the new 2011 Nissan Leaf, which is open for orders and will see its first owners take possession of their gas-free cars late this year.
A more remote possibility is an Infiniti version of the next Mercedes-Benz B-Class. Renault-Nissan recently inked an agreement with Daimler AG to share powertrains and other technology in small cars, which will bring Infiniti a new range of four-cylinder engines in the near future. The partnership with the parent company of Mercedes-Benz eventually will grow beyond powertrains and will likely include some future joint product ventures. Poore sees Infiniti as a big beneficiary of the Daimler deal--with sales of about 80,000 vehicles a year in the U.S., his brand doesn't have the economy of scale today to add big branches to its family tree. The Daimler link, he says, could be the catalyst for even more additions to the Infiniti lineup.
What the two new cars probably won't be, are an Infiniti M Coupe and convertible. Reports from around the Web suggest such a car is in development, but Poore says he was "surprised" by the illustrations circulating the Internet. Without dismissing them entirely, he suggests the automaker might have more pressing priorities than to build a production version of the 2009 Essence concept coupe.
Update: We have more details on the pair of cars coming to the Pebble Beach Concours. One will be a mass-market vehicle, Poore says, while the other will have a coupelike roofline and will be aimed at performance buyers. Both vehicles are due for release by late fall, he indicates.

C'mon. You're the VP!!!! What are we talkin about.
Anyway, according to the update in this article One will be a mass-market vehicle, Poore says, while the other will have a coupelike roofline and will be aimed at performance buyers.
These vehicles could not be the G because the G is the face of Infiniti and this clueless VP (whom by the way prematurely gave away info about a new entry level models) would know if they were doing anything with the face of their company. Sounds like a M coupe and possibly a higher end model above the M. I have no idea at this point.
Huh! First, its evident this VP has no clue what's going on. After he was asked this question, it sounds like he went back to the office and asked his co-workers "are we introducing two new models at pebble beach"?

The "one will be a mass-market vehicle, Poore says, while the other will have a coupelike roofline and will be aimed at performance buyers." comment refers to the "pair of cars smaller than the current G37 are coming to the display at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August" that were mentioned at the beginning of the article.
I'm not sure I agree with this. I don't think Pebble Beach is the right place to introduce two entry level vehicles. It isn't the right target market.
Plus, Edmunds does not normally enter the wild speculation "arena". They don't usually don't bring up future vehicles unless they have solid info. Just a thought.

Have a look at the G Coupe and G Sedan "brushstrokes" directly from the Infiniti Europe media site.

Do I think an M coupe is being discussed? Sure. Do I think it'll be at Pebble Beach in August and go into production later this year? No.

Infiniti never released any official news or brushstrokes about these two cars. They only confirmed it afterwards. Maybe the people at autoblog took these sketches off the euro site to raise the level of interest in their story. It would also explain why the VP was dumbfounded by the images.
