Well....its on its way to rescuemydata. They quoted me $600 flat fee knowing they will need the clean room. In about 2 days...they will email me a screen shot of what can be recovered and i pick and choose what i want. It will be put on DVDs and then sent back to me. That fee includes all parts/labor/cleen room, etc.)

The will evaluate it for free and tell me whats recoverable. If what I want is not recoverable...then...no fee. I only pay the $600 if what i want is recoverable. Time will tell. I just want my pictures and my documents. Everything else can be re-downloaded....errrr....i mean replaced

ok gurus....i obviously need a good external HD just for backups. So...here ar my choices this week

Best Buy - 160 gig Western Digital for $99.99
Circuit City - 160 gig Seagate for $69.99 or 250 gig Simpletech for $99.99

What do you guys think?

What abour SeaGate or Simpletech?

 

I would used DVD-R/W for backups

I have had tons of problem with WD drive and never used simpletech but I imagine they are up there with WD. Go with optical media if you are simply looking for a backup solution.

 

i will backup on dvds. But here is what i am thinking. I always d/l new music / movies or whatnot. I see myself updating a HD than making new DVDs of updated stuff (haviung to figure out where i stopped backing up last time and what needs to be backed up.). Knowing me...it would be a wise investment to have a external i can backup with stuff from either my desktop or laptop.

But...i will certainly backup the really important stuff on disks.

 

also..what about cache? Most of the good ones seem to be 8MB. A few of the cheaper ones seem to be less. I figure since its a backup drive...cache isnt that important. The 160 gig SeaGate that is $69.99 is only a 2MB cache.

 

i have the 300gb Seagate External which stores all my music/movies/programs....

WesternDigitals are great harddrives but can be querky at times but I've learned most of the tricks to getting them running optimally....alot of factors could have caused urs to crash.

 

well with external drives read write could be hampered by the cache and verion of usb you have. USB 1.x is about 12Mb per second USB 2.x is around 400Mb per second IIRC. The cache would help you more on the USB 2.x since the data is transfering at a higher rate if you are stuck with usb 1.x go for the cheaper drive as I seriously doubt you could overwhelm it.

 

considering you own a G35 andyou are into mission critical markets like downloading mp3, pix and maybe adult entertainment you probably should be in a storage system like this one below.

Just to update everyone....Rescuemydata successfully recovered my files. The cost was $600 for everything and all my data is on DVD. An expensive mistake to say the least. So....BACK UP EVERYTHING!!!

 

Man that is great news. But ouch! The sticker shock hurts.
