engine temp

Hey all,
My 2011 sedan hit 100k some months ago and I started to do some fluid changes. the first one i did was the coolant as summer in florida was approaching.

I took it to a Nissan dealer that performs my Oil changes from time to time and they did a coolant flush. fast forward a few months and I'm noticing that when idling for 5 or so minutes, the temp gauge gets damn close to the H and then slowly hovers a few ticks below but never back to middle point...once I'm moving again it goes back to middle; its generally in the 90's outside , sunny and humid. T
the reason i notice, is that the past 6 years, we have had same heat/weather and that needle seemed stuck in the middle position, even if idling for 30 minutes, i mean it never budged...so could the new coolant be different than what infiniti put in it from factory? or could it be something else that was not done or done differently at the Nissan dealership? otherwise , car behaves fine.... thanks

It’s not the coolant. Maybe fans not working? Or a water pump issue?

^ Hey Yoda- thanks, that may be my first diy step to resolve , but just to note, if this only happens when really hot 95+ and humid, otherwise, no leask on driveway and coolant level is fine...and as I am only comparing it based on how it worked before, would the temp needle moving up down be acceptable/normal or does it indicate a problem...guess that was something I didnt know...

Air can't work its way out on its own. It needs to be properly bled or burped.

I don’t think it is normal for the needle to swing like that. Mine doesn’t and yours didn’t used to. Seems like something is reducing the maximum cooling power of the system. About has to be a coolant flow rate issue or an air flow rate issue. Sorry, I am not expert enough to suggest how to troubleshoot the specific issue.

This car doesn't have a high-point drain to allow you to purge the collected air at the highest point, which is above the reservoir. Have to do it manually. That air can stay there despite coolant flow.

I had my coolant flushed and filled last week. (And the brakes. And the clutch.) Picked the car up cold from the shop at the end of the day, and fluid was topped to the cap and between the lines on the expansion tank. Drove it home, stuck it in the garage. The next day I checked again, and had to add maybe a 1/2 quart of fluid to fill the upper hose. Checked it a few times since, and it's fine, still topped off to the cap and between the lines on the expansion tank.

^^ this. thanks Rochester...not sure how or why i never looked, but before leaving this am, opened cap and nothing, zilch. So I called the Nissan dealer and told them about it and they said to bring it in; though I presume that after driving it there, it will most likely looked filled upon arriving ...if so , I will just buy a bottle of the stuff, though my reasoning on taking it back to dealer was to have it notated it in their system etc...anyway, thanks man, that may be the simple fix to this

You're welcome.

Not that it needs to be said, but please don't open the radiator cap when hot.

I'll be hitting 40K miles this summer, and thought this was a good mid-point in the life of the car to get the coolant swapped. Probably never do it again. Clutch & Brake fluid should be every 2-3 years regardless of mileage, so this is my third swap there. Transmission (6MT, not AT) and Differential fluid should be about every 30K (IIRC). Going to have my PS fluid swapped next month along with some PS hose replacements.

It's been a summer of fluid swaps, LOL. I think I'm going to do the uni-belt, too.

No mods for me this year, just maintenance. (sigh)

Good idea to replace the radiator cap too along with the tstat. If this was done at a dealer, they have the right tools to refill it without needing to bleed/burp.
