What would be the side effect of NOT replacing the diff bushing. Pretty sure mine is blown as the dark grey/black fluid was ALL over the rear diff last night as I removed the mufflers.
I ask because it appears I have to rip out the entire rear end of the freaking car for this one dinky little bushing...what are the cons to not replacing it? Car drives fine right now.
I suppose if I had the guts to replace it I would buy these two things, correct?
Figure $200 to $500 for installation, depending on the mechanic. I know that's a wide cost estimate, but it's a solid 4 hour project for a shop. The dealership won't do a bushing swap. They will only replace the entire subframe with the OEM bushing already pressed in place.
Like Lego said, you will suffer from clunking in hard shifts. And if you take that to the next logical level, you will suffer handling problems as drivetrain weight shifts around in ways that aren't tight to the car. How much of that is a serious problem is entirely subjective.
I had the Whiteline bushings installed last month, while the diff was down for a gear swap. And even though this was preventative maintenance and a mod of opportunity, I still got hit with $$$ specific to the bushings. It's a difficult and messy project.

I just ordered the z1 differential upgrade kitnwitg with z1 bushings and the full press kit....400 shipped. Sighhhhh. Maybe i can sell the tool in the classified afterwards.
PM me when you're done with it. I don't think my bushing is blown(yet), but like Rochester, preventive maintenance.
I'm also in Houston and would be willing to buy it off you after you're done with it so I can use it on the FX (already paid a shop to do the G a while back).
Update. I paid a local shop $550 to install the new bushings. Concurrent with those being replaced I had them replace my rear diff cover to a Z1 finned diff cover (because why not if the thing is being ripped out). Finally, I sold the tool to them for $100 so I guess my total was the following:
$400 in cover, bushings, tool
$550 in labor and taxes, et al
-$100 for tool purchase
Total = $850
I feel like I got a good deal, at least compared to the dealer. Honestly I feel nothing different back there but I also didn't let my rear diff bushing completely blow out, I caught it early. Still, I am glad it is done.
