Oil change question

Hello everyone!

I have a 2013 G37xS with ~63k miles. My last oil change was a year ago exactly and since then Ive only put 3k miles on her. I check the oil monthly and last I checked it looked great, topped off still golden brown, no burning smell.

My question is should i go by the 7500 mile interval which would probably be another year from now LOL or just change it annually?

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-30 and Mobil 1 M1-110 Filter
Also is this good oil to use or should i switch it to something else, got the car a year ago and this is going to be my second oil change!

Thank you!

Mobil is a good brand. I would follow with what the manual states, look for these indicators with oil:
. Engine oil with API Certification Mark*2*3
. Viscosity SAE 5W-30

Wow, you drive very little! LOL. I cannot help you with that question. I would think to change it once or twice a year since you drive little, but make sure that is looks/smells ok.

Change oil twice a year.

Paying for expensive oil is a waste of money in my opinion.

Check date codes on your tires as rubber deteriorates over time. Keep tires properly inflated

Interesting, thanks for the insight but for the small amount that I drive changing twice a year with regular oil would equate to me losing more money over time. I live in NY so doing the oil change on my own isnt really an option and getting it done at a shop 2 times a year would be more expensive than changing it with synthetic once a year.

I would just change it once a year at a minimum if it is quality synthetic oil, such as Castrol, Mobil, Penzoil, etc. If you are using supertech (Walmart brand)...ehh, every 6 months.

Yea I figure once a year is good, just checked this morning and it still looks good. Have the Mobil 1 coming this friday and will get it done this week sometime.

Thanks!

i'm in a similar situation to the OP. i've always done 6 months or 6000kms oil changes, whichever comes first. i have never triggered a change on mileage, always time, since i do not drive a lot. but generally i was at ~4500kms in 6 months, 9000kms in a year on average (5500 miles). my '09 is currently at 55k miles. i bought it with 25k miles in 2010.

my office recently moved downtown Vancity and i no longer drive for a commute - transit is my new reality. so now i expect to average at most 2000kms (~1200miles) in a 6 month period. basically it is my weekend fun car to go for a good rip, or for the occasional family outing if i want to squeeze the car seats in. i bought the car cash so i owe nothing on it and it has been extremely reliable so i'm in no hurry to sell - i still love rowing it through the gears as one of the last 6MT sedans around.

i always use pennzoil platinum and the larger Wix filter(i.e. Q56) so good quality in that regard. i live in a temperate city without too much swing from summer to winter and fairly consistent humidity - all things that also affect oil life. unheated garage kept, now a carport, it's whole life.

old habits tell me to still do 6 month changes, but my head (and car buddies) say that is nuts and to switch to a 12 month interval - at which point i'd be at ~4000kms or 2500 miles. i am at 6 months right now and the longer i think on it, the more inclined i am to move to the 12 month interval.

After all the research I've done, for me and in this case you as well, based on the low miles we drive annually, if you are using a good synthetic then changing more than once a year would just be a waste of money. As other said just check it every so often to make sure things are good. I'm going to be definitely sticking to once a year or every 7,500 miles.

As long as you start the car if you aren't driving it for a week or two to keep the oil moving around and you should be fine with once a year oil changes on synthetic (that's what i would do). We also have John who i think does the same oil changes , but i believe he drives a bit more then you and does 2 oil changes every year.
